Dwarfs not doing Designation jobs?
« on: January 31, 2015, 02:50:49 am »

So, I'm on the current version via the 40_24 r1 and just hit summer, and everyone suddenly stopped digging or smoothing.
Workshop jobs and building things is going fine, eggs collected, resources hauled and plots farmed. But if it comes to mining, they sit around saying no job.
Everyone has the equipment they need, and access to the sites. Make a new site right beside them even no change. Therapist all of them to wood cutters and they all go get axes but ignore all the marked trees.
So it seems like they just don't like designations. Going to (j) jobs shows no designation jobs on the list, but right now I can't think if that's weird or whether they even show up there usually or not.
Switching labour assignments around, saving then loading back in, fastdwarf on or off, etc all appear to change nothing.

Is this a known bug? Or am I just missing something obvious?

The most obvious problem would be
m: Standard/Marker Only

Quote
They also can now be assigned as "Marker only", which is similar to the job being suspended. Such designations will appear cyan on your screen.
Are the designations cyan?

I've not had my miners do this but it has happened a couple of times with woodcutters.
Yes they were set to proper designations and not marker.

Standard brown, I thought maybe prioritisation might be behind it on reading that link but it doesn't appear to change anything. neither does moving to the lastest starter park (in case it was a hack issue)

However, generating a new world and trying there seems to not have the problem. So who knows.

I assume you've tried to remove the designations and then recreate them?

In 0.40.23-24, but not 0.40.19 I have significant problems with "lost" jobs, i.e. tasks showing up on the jobs list, but never allocated, or broken off and never resumed. This includes digging, where random single tiles remain undug, individual trees remain unchopped, buildings that are never performed, manager as well as manually allocated tasks that are never performed in the workshop, etc. Removing the tasks (including half built structures, in some cases) and then recreating the jobs get the buggers moving. Since a year or so I have a paved road that's almost finished, for instance. I'm using the Lazy Newb Pack, but I find it very hard to believe the utilities have this far reaching effect on all kinds of job allocation.

Since 23/24 (update from 19, too) it appears that some jobs, in particular designations, have a very low priority in comparison to other labors. What I understand is that the priority you can assign to designations is only valid in relation to other designations, but not, for example, to fishing. Disabling all other labors in my miners gets any long pending mining designation done almost immediately.

I have the impression that since 23 (or somehwre between 20 and 23), dwarves are more reluctant to do several labors but have strong preferences for a few (or one) only. This makes it difficult to have a general role of "unskilled labour" to cover several jobs as the need may be.

The cases I talk about are bugs. The random unmined tiles remain unmined after years, the miners are set to mining only most of the time, and have gone stretches of time with no jobs. As soon as I designate some new mining, or remove the old one and redesignate it, they jump to it. As mentioned, it's not mining only, but all kinds of jobs.
However, I've seen that they seem to be reluctant to switch jobs, so at times virtually no dump hauling is done for quite some time, and then almost all unskilled labor is dumping, but that's just a job priority thing.

So I'm still getting this, and still, no one else is?
Are there any programmes on a computer than can mess up DF?

I just tried the game again figured it might be hack not being updated fully yet or something that time would have solved, and not even a season change this time and some corpses came along so I put everyone in a squad and on standing them down, no job, no job, no job.
Old designations, new designations, no more digging, cutting or smoothing will never happen in this fort.
Disbanding the squad doesn't do anything, cancelling all existing designations and jobs and making new ones doesn't do a thing. Going through therapist and switching labour settings, no change, different LNPs even, no change. etc.
Stockpiles get carried to, animals get moved and pitted, beds get made at the carpenters, walls get built. But digging does not happen.
If digging is the only task even, everydwarf just stands around no-jobbing.

But really, this isn't something you couldn't notice, so it can't be a problem with the version or the forum would be covered in information about it.
No one else running into this at all?

got any screen shots?

1. got pickaxes?
2. labor assigned to dwarves?
3. dwarves can path to designated *not marker* mining area? AND to the pickaxes?
4. military shouldn't (in my opinion) be assigned labors, as in previous versions having mining enabled (and hunter / woodcutting) caused uniform issues...
5. burrows?

I've checked all that, it might be the military thing however I have a feeling last time it effect immigrants who hadn't been in as well.
However, I tried the hack full-heal -r on the dead dwarves (as atleast one of them hadn't been in the military so that'd be a way to check if it was being in the military what did it) and all four resurrected dwarves can now mine and smooth.
But I've no idea how much that script messes with things so maybe it clears away whatever block being in the military puts on. But that they can means its an individual dwarf thing not a fort thing, and provides a solution around it.
