Training weapons useful?
« on: August 05, 2024, 07:37:49 am »

Okay, my Dwarfs are screaming for logs.  But nobody is cutting down trees because, I think, the axes are being used for combat training.  If I gave them practice weapons would they stop using the axes and let the Woodworkers cut down the trees?

Wait...to make practice weapons I need wood and to get wood I need a axe...sigh.

Well, I still want to know is practice weapons useful?  Is training with real weapons better than using wooden practice weapons?

There insurance but dwarfs don't suffer injurys as often in training, the days of training massacre are thank fully over.
Useing real weapons is more risky but its only better as its quicker (no swaping) and cheraper.

Agree, plus that's about the LAST thing *I* want to see from this kind of game - author spending valuable development time on useless graphics.

I think the only value training weapons have now is to assign them to the captain of the guard and their detail to reduce injuries from beatings, and to use them against prisoners for live training exercises that last longer because the prisoners don't die as fast.

I don't think I've ever seen an injury during training or sparring due to use of real weapons.  There can be injuries during training, but from what I remember it's only caused by dodging into obstacles and similar things.

Practice weapons are fine for training and even for beating down aggressive wildlife (not the giant animals, but crundles or monkeys).

And, it doesn't hurt to have your dwarfs spar without weapons for a few months or more, so you can fix your lumber shortage. Some players intentionally do this so their dwarfs learn to dodge before they learn to block.

There is something to be said about, if the stakes are as high, maybe reconsider your certitudes. One has to be aggressively allistic to feel entitled to be able to trust. But it won't happen to me, my bit doesn't count etc etc... Just saying, after my recent experiences I couldn't trust the public if I wanted to. People got their risk assessment neurons rotten and replaced with game theory. Folks walk around like fat turkeys taunting the world to slaughter them.
