Right. Engies dig a ditch around an semi large area, with the dirt on the inside. once thats done we are all inside, archers shoot the rats while the rest of us keep them from getting in.

The dwarves make good progress, the engineers loosening the dirt and the mages removing it. In a few hours, with the entrenchment is nearly complete, a single rat approaches. It catches and mauls a single archer before it is skewered with arrows. The poisons in the rat’s bite prevent the (assumed ever present) healing mages working as fast, and they tell you it will take 6 days to fully heal him. No other rats approach. You will have to do something to get their attention.

Shoot them. or get the mages to go mess with them. if neither of those work get troops out there for a bit, just enough to get there attention.

A gesture to the mages later, and you see a spike of rock tear through the nest, scattering the occupants. Some head off into the forests, but a number head towards you. you take stock as they approach.

The Mother streaks under the cover of the trees quickly as the archers fire, escaping harm. Then it darts forward, only to be caught in a shower of dirt and gravel waiting for it. As the first of the Dire Rats scrambles up the bank, the first of the Royal guards meets them head on, swiftly driving the pack to death. The second wave of rats has more luck, tearing into the first group of pikemen and slaying two of them. The guardians move to take their place, pushing back as the second wave of pikemen join them.
 A single rat slinks back from the barricade towards the mother, as they are joined by a group of the children and a mat of rats over the ground.

As the rocks slide up around the mother’s feet, arrows begin to rain down on her, cutting her down.
 A charge follows, led by the royal guard. the first group reaches the enemy and cuts a swathe through the children’s ranks, with the second group finishing them. The last adult falls to a stray blow from an engineer. More pikemen fall to the rat swarms, emptying one squad. The guardians rush to pull the rats from the others, and with the pikemen take out one swarm. The other falls before the guards, and the glade is quiet.

(( And short of a surge of posters, here's where we finish. The system may return at some point, nut only for < 10 people, because it turns out it is hell to keep track of in large numbers. ))
