If Tom Hanks were a dwarf.
« on: February 15, 2015, 04:49:15 pm »

As none of you may remember, I posted my first thread in 2010. So here I am again, in this bright and shiny 5 years later world with the same question. Can I recreate castaway?

My question was, what sort of perimeters, if any, I could set so that I could generate an island small enough to fit entirely on my embark boundaries. That is, is there any way to generate an island small enough that I can embark on that will be completely surrounded by coasts. I can't figure out how. I've gotten very close, but it's just slightly too large and will crash my game. Has anyone found a nice 5x5 or 3x3 island? How did you do it? Will the game even load if you have no place from which traders and raiders can enter your map?

You could try something like this:
(DF 34.11)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Basically set it to 4 complete edge oceans with the minimum number of ocean to like half the map. Use a mesh for elevation that heavily weights low elevation and a rain mesh that heavily weights high amounts of rain. Throw in a bunch of volcanoes - but not too many. Lone volcanoes will create a small island around them, but clusters of volcanoes will create larger islands.

This type of map won't spawn a lot of other civs, and some might not be able to spawn at all. But you should get an island all to yourself this way.

I haven't seen a 4x4 island, though. The volcano islands are still much bigger than that.

and I thought this thread was going to be about "Saving Private Urist's sock."

I've not seen islands that are smaller than the middle embark region (is that 16 x 16).
perhaps find a peninsular and send in a terraforming team to channel out the isthmus.

It should not be difficult if you include the island (which could be artificial) and los angeles in one normal coastal embark.

The radius of dwarven sight is only 20 tiles. A small obsidian formation 30 tiles from the land is "in the middle of nowhere", for a dwarf.

You should checkout the hermit mode in DF Masterwork 6.x... sounds right up your alley.
