A huge reason why ranged is so limited is because sight is rather limited.

Yes, the big thing that is needed is the difference between loading and shooting. Especialy for crossbows. Bows need to be made to be able to shoot faster, but be somewhat weaker and harder to learn, while crossbows need to be much slower to load, but have stronger shots and be much faster to learn to be accurate with.

The other big thing still needed with ranged combat is the ability to aim at a specific body part, and for the chance to hit be dependant on the location and size of the part, and random factors. This could bring ranged to about on par with melee.

^ very much this.

I always play set piece ranged (only when sneaking, versus stationary groups, never lairs, etc) and it'd flesh out the experience to have better/worse shot selection along with differences in weapon usage.

Yeah, there's a weird, gamey fog-of-war in DF right now.

Well Gamey indeed though a lot of it has to do with the fact that actual sight is pretty far ranged and would reasonably be several screens long.

It'd be nice to be able to see that far, given that we have a key for looking around, on a flat plane, as natural elevation would limit the range of vision, as it does in real life, long before things become imperceptibly small. Blind(ish) firing arrows in ballistic arcs would be contemporary with large, high power war bows, but need more organisation on the party of marksmen squads (and possibly unrealistic numbers for DF) to make effective.

If your animals aren't expendable, you could always station a dwarf or two out there?
