Starting Wagon Placement (and ice)
« on: January 12, 2016, 02:31:29 am »

I know this has been suggested a million times, and is on the eternal suggestions thread, but Toady said he was going to look into quality of life changes soon.

So, the starting wagon position.  Even if we can't get control of it, can the damned thing NOT choose to park over a frozen river/in the middle of a frozen lake? Its not like the game starts in early spring- which is when most temperate climates thaw out for winter, or anything...

I would love the ability to place the starting wagon (on top of that hill/mountain, choose which side of the river, or just wherever I want to start digging), but I'd settle for a little less stupidity.  Seriously, wagons starting on thin ice is just beyond derptastic of the starting 7.  At this point, unless I am in a cold/freezing biome, I just restart if I see its over some ice. I'll abandon the cold one too if I have a large amount of items I brought along (like 100 coal).

With luck this could make it in with starting scenarios, since that arc would probably touch on things in the vicinity.

I've actually never had the misfortune of embarking on ice. However, whenever I embark on a mountain biome, there a chance I'm going to lose the wagon when and everything  inside it when it gets embedded in the mountainside. At least, I assume it's embedded in the mountainside because:
1) My dwarves and anomals are spread out along the cliff face
2) I cant dig out the cart to see if it's there because ALL OF MY STUFF IS GONE.
When this happens, it throws up to an hour of careful planning down the drain. It sucks, it's stupid, and I would like an alternative. Being able to designate where the cart goes would be a solid fix.
Sometimes I'll try to build a bridge between continents. When the conditions even allow for it, I have to deal with embarking right on the beach getting smacked around by waves due to the cart trying to get as close to the center of a 12x4 embark as possible, when that center is smack dab in the middle of a channel. Better wagon placement to avoid that would be nice too.

I don't know how it all works, I just throw molten science at the wall and see what ignites.

Good points to add! I had just come from an embark where my wagon was parked on a frozen river, but I had forgotten about shore embarks.  Even if the waves don't wash your items away, they still spook your haulers and spam you with error messages.  I didn't know that about mountain embarks, since they don't have herbs/trees/incapable of surface farming, I tend to avoid them actually.  Its mostly because I find seasonal underground crops a pita, so I just grow things like rope reeds and whip vines year round.
