Grow trees through holes

Can tree saplings grow through holes in the roof?

I just added a roof over my entire map. But I didn't want to remove all trees, so I left some holes in the roof, hoping one day the saplings could grow into trees.

Do not worry about those trees not growing. Rather the other way worry about them sometimes growing in a not wanted way. See http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/mantisbt/view.php?id=8752 - trees can spawn even in block walls

Some of them died, and somenew saplings appeared.
Maybe I should wait for some years?

Saplings die if they do not have space to grow.

After 1 year's test I can confirm saplings can grow through 1x1 holes...  only 1 of them managed, the others either died or stayed unchanged.
