Logs killing woodcutters
« on: August 01, 2014, 11:28:33 am »

Alright, so I finally started playing the new update. My woodcutter was promptly killed by a falling log. How do I prevent this from happening?

I have this same question.  Can they dodge falling logs?  That might be a way to mitigate the revenge of the trees.

New embark 15 minutes in and my woodcutter has a broken leg.  Fun is sure to be had.  Much Fun indeed.

It's rather rare for a woodcutter himself to get hurt, although I think toady said that .06 should fix it. It seems more common in inexperienced wood cutters.

Maybe you're right.  One of the cats that had his liver bruised was likely an inexperienced woodcutter as well.

Logs from the tree he is currently cutting should fall away from him safely. Logs from trees he previously cut that are stuck in the current tree (and any other items, such as dead bodies), however, fall straight down with standard Dwarf Fortress lethality.

One way to avoid injured woodcutters is to avoid felling trees into other trees you intend to fell. For example, start at the outside and work your way in while felling the tree away from the center. You can also just inspect the tiles above the woodcutter for random items while cutting, and reposition your woodcutter if necessary. Alternatively, cutting down every other tree in a checkerboard pattern may create suspended logs, but they will hopefully remain in the unharvested trees.

Exactly he was so inexperienced he got in the way of a falling tree.

In my case last night, the trees were not layered--in that one tree wouldn't be dropping logs onto another tree.  But it was on a hillside/slope due to a volcano embark.  So maybe the slope had something to do with the physics.  But I will take the suggestions to heart.  I think you're on to something with the checkerboard designations.

They say it's a bug, I say the elves have booby-trapped your trees. Obviously you must answer their aggression in kind.

40.06 seems fine. burned down a forest in 40.05 to kill of f a bugged necromancer siege. the trees would collapse like caverns when cut and then sometimes the woodcutter would get hit by a log too. not even so much as a bruise now from that combination. in 40.05 they were getting minor internal a injuries. seems like mortality then was more a matter of rng though. also dropped a tree with a miner and baby in it because ??? and all three were fine, except for the woodcutrer being unconscious from dead tree leaves collapsing. no other injuries.

also the fire did nothing for the siege except make the zombies manageable and clear room for siege engines. not recommended against  legendary undead combatants. they were ambulatory and fighting with all flesh missing.

woops double post.

If you do rectangle designation over multiple levels for felling trees dwarves will sometimes climb up trees and cut them in wierd places, often injuring themselves.

Using left mouse click on the base tiles of the trees seems to solve your issue.

That is very true.  Trees can be designated at any trunk section, so you can order your dwarves to perform full-on tree surgery if they can actually reach the canopy.  A given tree can only be designated on one of its trunk sections though, if you d-t a higher log then the ground-level one drops its designate.  Cut everything from the ground^^

Also beware of mass-cutting with empty woodpiles.  While my lumberjack has yet to be struck, swarms of haulers around him as he works is a poor idea.

this also brings up a point. it may not be the best idea to have too many wood cutters and mass designate. especially in heavily forested areas.

My lone, legendary woodcutter just knocked himself out cold in 40.24. No hills. Didn't see it happen but I'd guess logs from his last fell had been caught in the branches. I might try to replicate it, some of my trees are taller than the others so the order they're chopped might matter.
