Coming back after a long hiatus...
« on: January 24, 2015, 05:39:52 pm »

So been lurking on the forums for a bit, looking into the patch notes, I've not actually played since the world got turned on sadly, but I see how things have changed since 0.40.01 have come out, but I do have a few questions?

1) How has animal breeding changed? I read somewhere that now animals need to be adjacent to one another to breed? Same for dwarves?

2) What's this about temples? I can't find anything non-adventure mode related to them on the dev blog or wiki?

3) Is there any other big changes I've missed that aren't explicitly outlined in the 'new stuff' parts of the changelogs?

Thanks in advance guys. Good to be back.

1. Yes, maybe.
2. Not yet, next release.
3. No, not really.

1. Yes. Animals now need to be adjacent to one another, and they have a chance of being gay (or at least not willing to breed with members of the opposite sex). The latter can be modded out if it irks you.
2. Next release, at Putnam said.
3. Zombies are now really smegging dangerous. Don't embark in evil zones or near a tower unless you're totally prepared.
Also, the game runs a lot slower now, so you might want to make smaller worlds and embark sites.

Hard science is like a sword, and soft science is like fear. You can use both to equally powerful results, but even if your opponent disbelieve your stabs, they will still die.

Animal breeding needs to change in that some animals should not marry and instead be polygamous. Homosexuality is common in animals, but most animals who copulate with same sex animals would be equally happy to do it with opposite sex animals too.

On the item is an image of a dwarf and an elephant. The elephant is striking down the dwarf.

For old times' sake.

I believe animals ARE promiscuous. For instance, my giant cave spider breeding couple had a daughter, and the daughter birthed while caged (the children are hauled off to a cage immediately when born, but they are born grown up). Since caged animals don't breed, but may birth if impregnated beforehand, she thus must have been impregnated by her sire. I also haven't had any problems replacing one of the two birds in a breeding couple (kept in a separate nest box pen for ease of egg handling).

The world now runs in the background and things change (wars, conquests, reclaims) around you. This means extra stuff for the game to track which slows it down a bit. The solution is to have a smaller world (less events to track) and a smaller embark (less objects in fort to track).
I personally go for a Small or Smaller world and a 3x3 embark.
