Military charges into kill room - fun
« on: February 11, 2015, 12:46:57 pm »

My melee dwarfs will charge into my kill room where they usually fall off the walkway down 3 z-levels and wipe themselves out every time.

As soon as they have LoS they ignore burrow restrictions or manual 'station' orders. I build walls to block the LoS into the kill room but these dwarfs just chase the line of mobs around the walls right into the kill room again.

How do you deal with this?

Make automated goblin-processors and the army fully exclusive - i.e. when the squads get the go-ahead, the atomsmasher is definitely off, the deep-drop is completely inaccessible (that means inaccessible to goblins), the minecart-smasher's latch is disabled. And when the machinery is churning away, the squad is safely behind locked doors or raised bridges and can't see an enemy.

Or just use one the methods, not both. You can defend a fort with only soldiers and no traps or with only traps/machines and no army.

Ok thanks, that makes sense.  Sounds like I need to use airlock rooms so they can't access the kill room at all.

As intricate as this military system is, it would be nice for these guys to just follow simple orders.  :-\

One day we will have true dwarven phalanxes that hold their ground. Until that day all we have are mad berserkers, and you have to plan your architecture for that :P

Always a safe default assumption in this game

Do not have your squad active when you have an active kill room ? Or wall off your kill room with bridges ?

Any time you have a dwarf next to a Fun location, expect even more Fun. It seems obvious, really.

Unless the dwarf is physically incapable of reaching the Fun location, of course.

Sorry if this sounds terribly basic, but why not keep a locked door between the kill room and the army as long as you don't want them to enter there? They might be able to ignore burrows, but doors manually locked shut?

I didn't have locked doors or bridges between my military and kill room because I figured the mobs needs a valid path into my fort before they entered the kill room in the first place. Was hoping the Axelords could clean up anyone who made it past the traps.  Multiple drawbridges to seal up the kill room before releasing the berserkers worked just fine.

Thanks for the help!

Well even if you keep them in civ mode they could still charge into enemies, some vengeful dorfs just do.
