... Sadly, sleeping at the site causes the game to crash.

.....As does sleeping any distance away.

I have retired the dwarf at a distant fort. Lets see if I can un-retire the old fort now that it has the dragon. I suspect not.

Edit - Suspicion confirmed. When I try and unretire the fort it causes a crash. Dammit.
Edit 2- Can unretire the fort from where I picked up the dragon. Addition of historical character causing bug?

Going to see if I can unretire the adventurer - success!

I can I retire the adventurer, but the moment I arrive at the outskirts of the fortress embark location, the game crashes.

Out of ideas at this stage.

If it's not already up there, I advise posting this on the bug tracker, since it's definitely not intentional.
I have found only this similar-ish report: 0000618: Caged goblins are freed after reclaiming though probably not similar enough.

I can I retire the adventurer, but the moment I arrive at the outskirts of the fortress embark location, the game crashes.
If you are getting reproducible crashes (ideally in vanilla DF], upload your save folder to http://dffd.bay12games.com/ , fill out a bugreport at http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/mantisbt/bug_report_page.php and add that save to it. Maybe others will be able to find out why does it crash.

Ahh so f ing close to it.
But maybe it will visit your fort the more natural way?
I was cheering for you too.
Like I told a random person in the street about it, suprisingly they thought I was joking and not bat man shit crazy

The dragon seems to be even more trouble than it's worth. Never thought that could be possible.

Why don't you try checking legends to see if the dragon is corrupted, maybe? Do you know its name?

Also, maybe making a new fort to make time pass might help, or it might just cause a crash.
I advise making it nearby if you try, just so you can use it to retire adventurers closer to the cage so you don't have to spend too much time travelling near the crashy-fort.

Nah, this is par the course for issues with DF. It wouldn't be much of an achievement to do anything in DF if you didnt have to overcome something.

That said - and amazing travel trip around the world in an entirely ascii world not-withstanding - it is a bummer.

I've submitted a bug report for the initial fast travel issue, I am trying to upload the save to dffd.

I think im going to see where the dragon disappears after it escapes. That should be interesting.

kinda wonder if it's possible to trade the caged dragon with someone and have the game remember it.
since I had face travel working with holding caged units.

Nope - I'm actually testing it further and have stopped at a dwarf fortress to resupply.

I just tested the theory by selling the dragon cage; after which I slept for 8 hours. On waking I find that the cage is empty.

Oddly all the goods I had traded away earlier were on the same square I dropped them, and were no longer marked as property of the fortress.

Bug report 1 up, http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/mantisbt/view.php?id=8785, save file in notes for anyone who wants to muck around.

This save file is for the start of the route. The adventurer has just reached the fort with the male dragon, and has to travel to "dragon routed" the fort with the female dragon.
