Weird stuff happening
« on: February 08, 2015, 04:56:38 pm »

I was trying to deal with a crundle horde sitting behind a walled off (but drawbridge accessible) section in the second cavern for several years, blocking arrival of more interesting creatures. The buggers are clinging to a wall 2 tiles off the ground and won't move, while a giant rat sits on the top of a tree three tiles away.
I bring in my militia for protection and my single crossbowdwarf (level 5-6). The crossbowdwarf fires off all 25 bolts without hitting them (I counted 25 bolts on the ground). I started building a staircase to get up to their level and build a bridge to the buggers (I'd just done that to the crundle bundle clogging up traffic to the 3:rd cavern, which got them moving). Then a couple of civilian dwarves started climbing on the walls in the walled off section, 1 tile off the ground, moving sideways, and apparently without trying to get down (before the first section of the staircase had been built, so they couldn't have use it to get up and then fled sideways). Meanwhile the staircase building was frequently broken off since the crundles scared the builders, and the woodcutter refused to cut down the rat tree because of the crundles (both normal and expected).
I then looked at the unit screen and saw a meeting, so I looked at the DFHack extended unit screen and saw the stress level was way up all around (at least 3 above 100000), after having been fine (around 0 or negative) 14 days earlier. Looking at units, they seemed all to be drawn into an ongoing conflict, but noone seemed to be the cause of it. I have a starting 7 grudge between one of the miners and the carpenter, but both seemed to be drawn in, rather than participating, and nothing is shown on the justice screen. Moreover, there were a lot (5-10) of stressed "drawn in" messages for the dwarves I looked at all generated in less than two weeks. The grudging dwarves have partied together despite their grudge, and the justice screen is completely blank: I haven't had any justice incidents in 12 years.
If someone has been killed, it doesn't show in the unit count, at least, and I haven't seen any "dead" or "missing" reports, or anything else indicating something is going on.

I crashed the game, repeated the attempted crundle clearance, and the same issues repeated. I crashed the game again and skipped the crundle clearance, and the stress levels and messages are normal at the crisis time of the first attempt (the second attempt was aborted before that time), so there seems to be a relation between the attempted clearance of the camping crundles and the conflict, but I fail to figure out why that would be.
