Smite: F2P MOBA by HI-Rez Studios, now open-beta
« on: April 02, 2013, 05:08:26 am »

So, I'm making a new thread for this game, since the last one has not had a post for like 4 months and it has entered open-beta.

For those of you who don't know, Smite is a F2P MOBA with a heavy god theme. Every character in the game is based on a real god (Kali, Ra, Thor, etc.).

The premise of the game is like every other MOBA. Pick a god and kill other gods and towers until you get to their final boss, a big ass Minotaur, and then kill that. There are also two other game-modes, domination (capture points and hold 'em) and Arena (basically team death-match, this is my favourite).

Now, to start with you have a few free gods, as well as five gods in rotation, akin to LoL. The free gods are actually quite good and you will usually not have much need to buy the others. Buying a new god is quite expensive (about 5000 favour, you get about 50 per match not including level up bonuses), but you can rent a god for a single match for about 100.

The game doesn't have any rune system like other MOBA's. You can pretty much only buy gods and play matches, not much else.

As I mentioned before, the game is now in open-beta and I encourage you to at least try it out.

Also, for the record. No, it's not Pay-to-Win. And please don't bring it up.

(God, I'm terrible at making new threads)

Have they improved the god kits? Last time I checked, those ranged from incredibly bland over blatant ripoff-frankensteins to barely decent. The game system actually is fun for one, for a MOBA, but they would need better gods to showcase that.

Plus the way the Minotaur used to work basically spelled game over as soon as one Phoenix was down.

They have quite a few more gods than last time, some of them are quite interesting. Like Aphrodite, who can link with another player to buff them and channel her own abilities through him (as in, if she uses an AOE while linked the ability will come from the person you linked with, it's complicated). There's also Apollo's chariot of awesome.

So I figure resurrecting this thread is better than starting a new one!

I wanted to see who all plays this as I am about to start league play and want a team of some sort to do it with. Anyone else level 30? Anyone close to level 30? How many people even play it? I prefer it over LoL or DotA any day as I find it to be much more fun and interesting.

Also note that it is out of beta and is actually fully released now. For people that want to you can even buy all current and future gods as a single purchase. If you don't want to do that and prefer to buy gods through play then the grind is much better than LoL's and it really only takes about 1 week of steady play (of only about ~2 hours a day) to get a new god which isn't too bad.

I play very casually, about level.. 10? I still suck though so you probably don't want me anywhere near your team.

I do find this game a lot more fun than what little I played of DotA2, and less complicated too. Real fun.

I'm reviving this thread in a effort to spur some new interest in this game.

So I've been playing Smite lately, and quite a lot of it actually. It has become my go-to MOBA, effectively replacing LoL (though in whole honesty, they are different games enough, then again MOBA is ambiguous term enough for me to throw those two in the same bin).

My preferred region is Europe, but I have no idea if that setting acts as a hard-region-lock as LoL or more like DotA/PoE. In any case, I'm having much fun. Controls were a bit problematic at first, requiring of me to get accustomed to WASD control scheme (pffffft, arrow keys 4 life and all that), and I think ideally one would actually want a controller... maybe. Still, once you get over that, it is pretty fun, as said. As for the current status of the game, it's just entered Season 2 so I guess that's a good start to climb the ladder? If you want though, personally I find the different game mods fun enough on their own to forgo any competitive play, then again I'm not competitive oriented in the first place.

Well, PTW in any case, if any of you wants to play a friendly match/needs a team buddy, send me a PM. Otherwise, ptw I guess?

I have played this a ton and used to play with a clan before life stuff took me away from it. I would certainly enjoy to play it some time with some people here.

I'm considering trying Smite again. I just can't get back into League, and I'm not masochistic enough to learn Dota. Smite seems like a good alternative.

Still pretty fun. Hit level 30, decided to grab the Ultimate God Pack, lovin' it.

Big update just hit this Wednesday, with changes to hunters, a few existing items, and a ton of new items. I just don't like this new UI though. The old one was fine.

Yeah I have been playing since early beta and had the god pack since then which was a wonderful investment. The UI changes and different changes have been annoying...but I have seen so many of them I am just used to things changing. Overall the improvements have been just that...improvements...I have yet to find a reason to truly dislike most of them yet

On the topic of new UI... I don't like it too. Granted, I've only been playing this for good few weeks, but it isn't even a case of "the thing I experienced first was better because it was first"... it's simply more confusing and less clean than the old one, plain and simple. But eh, it's not game-breaking for now, for me at least.
