Where do I put my dead?
« on: January 26, 2015, 01:21:46 pm »

I've embarked next to two necromancer towers, and want to know where I should place my refuse and corpse stockpiles.  I want them to be safe, and close to base.

Inside your fort.  Behind all your dwarves, and away from any entrances.
  The caverns comes to mind.

  -Also consider putting one in an outside building, behind a few weapon traps.  Necros aren't trap avoid.

Hold up.  Do necromancers have to be right next to a body to reanimate it?

LOS.  12 or so tiles, normally.

Does nobody else build mausoleums?  Stone coffins and sarcophagi make for better masons  :)

I always put mine under the fort, closer to the Blood of Armok.

I'm new to succession forts in general, yes, but do all forts designed by multiple overseers inevitably degenerate into a body-filled labyrinth of chaos and despair like this? Or is this just a Battlefailed thing?

There isn't much middle ground between killed-by-dragon and never-seen-by-dragon.

This will make your garbage disposal a super safe dream.

Dig a 3x1 trench. Place a 1x1 raising bridge in the one end of the bottom of the trench. Next, up on the level above, place a minecart stop set to dump into the trench on he same end as h bridge (b-C-S, then tap d until the direction is right). Build walls around the stop and the hole it dumps into above the bridge. Leave a 1 tile gap in the wall. In this gap place a pressure plate set to go off whenever a citizen of any weight steps on it. Connect the pressure plate to the bridge, place a wall next to the bridge in the trench. Now, finally, go to (h)auling, create a new route (can't remember the key), and create a new (s)top with the cursor on top of the track stop. Then press enter, enable the items that you want pulverised in the stockpile list that pops up, create a stockpile for those items near the trash compactor, and set a new (s)tockpile link back in the stop's menu. At the same time, delete all the departure conditions. If you followed that,you'll end up with
Code: [Select]
z0    z-1
+++++ OOOOO  O - wall
+OpO+ OOOOO  + - floor/stockpile
+OsO+ OOOOO  p - pressure plate
+O.O+ OObOO  s - track stop
+OOO+ OOOOO  b - bridge
++▼++ OO▲OO  ▲ - up ramp
+++++ OOOOO  ▼ - down ramp
This, a compact trash compactor.
EDIT: this is naturally only for enemy dead, livestock, wildlife--that sort of thing. Your own dead dwarves should go in an underground, well secured vault, inside coffins.

As long as you keep your corpses ~15 levels below ground level, and keep the necromancers out, you ought to be fine.

15 levels... hm.  Guess I should fix that...  and the garbage disposal sounds cool, though I want to use bones for tons of bolts.  Bolts are amazing.

Oh and if I put a roof over my channel that goes down 7 levels, could they raise them?  A corollary; can necromancers raise dead with wall in between 'em?

Just a little update.  Was on my 2nd year, beginning of it, and got my first siege!  All zombies caged (4) and one necromancer caged up!  What shall I do with them?  Muhahahhahha!

I always put mine under the fort, closer to the Blood of Armok.

I build a mausoleum, down in the lower ore vein levels.

In a recent fort I started putting coffins down the middle of the bedroom hallways (we were experiencing a lot of accidents) and enjoyed all the "was interested near a masterfully made coffin recently" thoughts.

You might consider this overkill, but after I carve out a masoleum, I put one dwarf in here and seal all entrances. Food, booze, corpses and materials are delivered by a secure chute. The mausoleum is full of 2x1 holes, one tile is for the coffin, the other for stairs. After a body has been placed in the coffin, a floor is built over the stairs and a memorial slab is placed.
There's also a "dojo" that trains combat skills and swimming here, because warrior monk gravekeeper*. If the dead rise for any reason, they'll be promptly smacked back inside their graves. One of these guys killed a ghost. A ghost.

And why I don't consider this an overkill? Undead are both the easiest and the worst enemies. Trained military will make short work of them, only kobolds would die faster. But if they happen to rise inside your fortress, while everyone is busy fighting at the gate, they will SLAUGHTER their way through your civilians. And the morale penalties, oh god, the morale penalties.

*forgot the word.

Let the dead, bury the dead...

Or throw them in magma.
