Stopping a vengeful dwarf from endlessly chasing a random animal?

How can I stop one of my dwarves from just chasing an animal that pissed him off all around the map? I've tried conscripting him and giving him an order, but that didn't help.

You can try a burrows that contains a job task. It may or may not work.

Do you have military?  Send them to kill the thing, hopefully before someone else decides to attack it and a dwarven dogpile forms.
