Troll escape from cage trap

I had a caged troll in the cavern level. While the mechanic was enroute to get him and put him in the "archery range" I got a purple text pop-up message. It said, "A creature has been released from a cage" or something similar. I looked, and there goes the Troll. There were not any other creatures down there, sentient or otherwise, at the time. Thoughts?

Gremlin. Sneaky cavern creatures that pick locks, pull levers, and open cages. If a dwarf had been nearby there would have been a pause recenter GREMLIN SPOTTED message.
