I've had some trees puncture holes in my fort. Kinda makes sense; seeing as if the ground doesn't have much to hold itself together, something heavy and sharp like a tree branch from a felled tree could puncture right on through. I didn't mind when it happened because it allowed me for some aboveground crops underground.

Ok, at least in my case it is confirmed: cutting down a tree if there is no wall below results in a hole in the ceiling.

Haha, when I first saw roots, I knew they would make up for some kind of surprise.

I have one hole in my floor that corresponds to a smoothed wall underneath, so this might happen too for trees that can't have any roots.
