Who can pull levers?
« on: January 10, 2015, 05:17:58 am »

Can anyone else other then your dwarfs in Fortress mode pull levers? Your adventurer when he visits your old fort? Merchants? Monkeys? Goblins? Anybody with a hand?
If somebody like goblins can do so, will they intentionally go for nearby levers to pull them or only pull them when they bump into them on their way around?

I am wondering how FUN idea is to have a lever on each side of a bridge to my fort, allowing it to be openable from both inside and outside.

Ah, everyone's favourites. Rhesus Macacques.

I don't think you'll get much ‼fun‼ from levers by your gate. Scattering them through the caverns could prove ‼entertaining‼, though.

OK, thanks. I was mostly wondering a) if invaders would be able to open my gates, b) if I close gates and retire the fort, to be still able to get inside in adventurer mode.

Hm, will dwarves or other beings in retired or abandoned fortress pull any levers?

As far as i can tell, normal creatures can only pull a lever as a specifically assigned job, i.e. anyone who isn't a subject of your fortress will never pull a lever, just like they'll never weave thread, smith copper breastplates or collect plants while present on an actual game map.

The only exception are gremlins, the single creature that has the "mischievous" tag. Rhesus macaques are "liked for their mischief" but lack the actual "mischievous" tag, so should _not_ pull levers (going by tags, if macaques were able to pull levers, so would be keas and polar bears).

No, retired dwarves are not touching levers.

I've added a category for [MISCHIEVOUS] creatures (i.e. lever pullers) to the wiki and added an entry to the creature info template - see Gremlin, for example. It'll take a while for the category to populate, but it should be fully populated and list all lever pullers in under an hour.
Edit: Interestingly enough, while rhesus macaques can be admired for their mischief, they lack the [MISCHIEVOUS] tag.

There was a typo in the siegers' campfire code. When the fires went out, so did the game.

Thanks. But it seems only Gremlins have that tag. Maybe rhesus macaques are intended to have it too, so let's bugreport? Though that would also make them spawn invisible and with Ambusher skils...

You could probably get a fair bit of fun out of giving kobolds, gray langurs, keas and rhesus macacques [MISCHIEVOUS].
