How to make level inaccessible for pets

Hi all!

I jut noticed the cave spider on one of the fortress levels and I want to keep it in safety to collect webs. In this case I need to make this level inaccessible for cats, so I placed hatch covers on the up-down stairs on this level and made it tightly closed but cats just ignore it. Why? What am I doing wrong? What can I do in this case?

I have no idea: (q) and (o) really should make the doors "tightly closed." As far as I know, you're not doing anything wrong.
