No praise to the miners?
« on: January 02, 2015, 10:05:38 am »

I've just explored the 3:rd cavern completely, and there is no sign of candy. Since my embark is 3*3, which supposedly should guarantee its presence, does this mean it's hidden within rock (and presumably discoverable by puncturing the magma sea a number of times in different places to reveal more of it)?

Yes. Basically puncturing the magma sea gives you a 95% chance of spotting at least 1 vein of ore.

Adamantine is never visible in the third cavern. You need to breach the magma sea.

3x3?

But I saw them on a 2x2 map.

I'm afraid you're wrong, Naryar. The (top of the) vein has been visible in the 3:rd cavern every time until now (last time I actually had 2 in a 3*3). I might have been lucky, and you unlucky (or the other way around if the 3:rd cavern is a dangerous mess).

I can confirm that I've seen the tops of pillars in the third cavern layer.  Its somewhat rare though.  Most times you just have to keep tunneling/sealing off "windows" into the magma see until you find a few.

This describes the conditions for spires. Basically you're guaranteed to have candy on a 3x3, but you can have it on a 2x2.

My site has a single spire, the highest level was surrounded by the magma sea.

By careful application of water I managed to extract 24 candy from the highest z-level.

in most cases the spire will appear from the magma sea, if you're lucky maybe it starts in the third cavern layer.

in a 2x2 embark is kind of a lottery, the average is at least 1, i got 2 in my last fort. according to the wiki there can be even 4 in a 2x2 embark, but that would be being incredibly lucky i guess.

my advice. breach the magma sea, once you find the spire. try to find its location in the upper lvls to see when does it starts. and mine lvls around it, checking which parts can be mined from the spire without getting into the dangerous center. and try yo save the game before doing anything crazy.

mining the upper lvls of the spire should churn out enough for several adventurer sets or a good equipped 10 dwarves militia.

I've actually mined out the safe part of an adamantine spire through the magma sea in a previous fort (took a lot of time and a lot of water). The last thing I did before scrapping it (due to FPS) was to breach the adamantine core. That was actually an anticlimax, sine the only thing I found at the core was more adamantine for something like 5 levels.

Anyway, it's good to know that you should look through the magma sea for any additional spire even if you find one in the cavern.
