magma smelting/smithing
« on: December 28, 2014, 01:33:26 am »

I want to dump minecarts filled with magma into a few pits (1-tile, 1-zlevel) channels so that my dwarfs can use that instead of needing fuel. What level of magma do I need? Is 4/7 enough to avoid evaporation or degradation from use? If I have 4/7 magma in a pit and build a magma smelter over it, will it work forever?

What is the easiest way to dump my magma minecarts into the pits?

It's described in the magma workshop descriptions, I think, but if I recall correctly, 4/7 (or is it 5/7? Better check the wiki) is required for for a magma driven workshop to function. Evaporation happens on 1/7, but not 2/7 or more. Magma doesn't cool, so it should work forever.
A track stop set up to dump in the direction where the pit is should work for getting the magma from a mine cart into the pit. There is another discussion thread discussing whether magma containing mine carts cause hauler burns or not, but I think the conclusion was that it doesn't, in which case you should be able to fill the mine cart, and then get it placed on the mine stop by defining a route stop on top of it. I've yet to try it, since the goblins haven't been over to donate the metal I need for the mine cart, though. As a warning, I can mention I tried to use a nether-cap mine cart, and it just gets destroyed when exposed to the magma.

4/7 works, 3/7 doesn't.

Having issues with an upper z-level of my volcano not refilling and being at 3/7 or 4/7 due to digging out of magma moat.

So the forges and smelters cancel jobs all the damn time  >:( Would dfhack a blob of magma to refill it, but it's in .40.23.

Close off your magma intake (e.g. obsidian plug, if you don't already have a draw bridge to keep critters out), and use a screw pump to scope up what you need.

My volcano top filled up when I drained from it (0.40.19)

So my forges are not using 1 magma unit for every job? So my floodgates are consuming some magma when They are closed OR my magma cannon will blow up soon...   :o

Your floodgates destroy all magma occupying the same tile as them when they close.

I think I have it figured out, thanks. Filled a few spots and will use those to build enough mine carts to fill the rest of my "channels" to 6/7. The magma sea will then be sealed away by a raised drawbridge. I think those are indestructible (magma-safe materials).
