Edit:An elven caravan has arrived! Is this a bug?.[/spoiler]

Shouldn't be. Demons are not a siege,

and elves know nothing about demons, as they have never discovered the precious candy themselves. Imagine the horrors that could happen if they did. They only have useless wooden armor to fight the clowns with, too.

Some very old forts with huge (40-60 dwarves, all well armed and trained) militias have fallen to the HFS, so good luck!

If you get lucky and get all weak ones (made of something easy to break and with no nasty syndromes) it is possible to hold them off with limited to no casualties if you have a well trained/equipped 5-10 dwarf militia, but getting this lucky is rare.

Wall yourself off; start setting up a massive grinder of traps. If you get sieged, try pitting the two forces against each other. A large force of goblins can kill a few demons. Otherwise, look up Deathgate to see how they handled it. If you hadn't already opened it, I would recommend looking up the dwarven checkerboard thread. It might still give you a few useful ideas, though.

Do not throw your militia at a mountain! Throw a mountain at the enemy! Cave in traps are your friend!

Lava issues? Maybe it doesn't want to discover HFS?
What's HFS? Anyway, I'll give it a shot.
It's an acronym for Hidden Fun Stuff. It's the only spoiler I can think of in DF that is a really BIG spoiler, it's like finding your first magma or for the first time ever discovering the caverns but even more important; the surprise is worth it, so I'd advise against looking it up. Once you know it, you can't forget it, and everyone should at least be surprised once because they'll only ever get once chance to be surprised :P.

Well, there is one other spoiler, if you don't see it the first time...or the second time...or the third time...until you use DFHack to find where the heck it is :P

You have now discovered what Hidden Fun Stuff means. Your safest option right now is to wall off the path and get a far better military before you attack them again. One or two dozen steel/adamantine-clad dwarves should be enough, but cave-ins or repeating spikes also work. Both can beat all the demons, but both can also go horribly wrong.

At least you got no metal demons or blobs, right?
Nein. Do you think this battle will be long enough for securing the farms to be a priority?

So I'm mining some adamantine, and then I have to quit for a few minutes. the adamantine is selected in green(starter pack), I don't get an error message, but no one will actually mine it!!! Any suggestions? my FPS is around 60, and when I first realized the problem, there were apparently 0 idlers.

I think it's because they can't path to a digging site with higher priority.
Say you dig a channel three deep 1x1 square, they will get tired after 1 or 2 digs and climb out, and won't be able to climb back down to finish the job. if that channel has higher priority than something else nothing will get done.

HFS is the reason you mine adanantine. Do NOT GOOGLE OR WIKI IT
, it's for your own enjoyment, okay?

The HFS is by far the biggest surprise I ever had in DF.
So I cleared up all the lava issues. You don't have to answer this, but do you think "HFS" is something 10 markdwarves and 32(EDIT:22) war dogs can handle?

Having once lost a fort with three full candy legendary melee squads backed by eighty dwarves with crossbows, I cringed reading this question.

I assume he had them assigned to a sacrificial squad and charged that into the demons.
