Military dwarf keeps getting face wounds
« on: January 01, 2015, 08:27:52 pm »

I'll admit I'm using a danger room for training but there is one odd thing that keeps happening: One of my militia dwarves keeps getting their ears and cheeks exploded by the wooden spears. They have a helmet and hood, but somehow they keep getting hit. It's strange, but it's always the same position in the roster, the second dwarf on the first militia that has the problem. I've already lost two dwarves to infections, is there something I can do to stop this from happening?

For some reason, helmets (and possibly hoods) offer no face protection. Cloaks however do, and a leather one should protect against danger room injuries.

I understand that it is disappointing when a dwarf makes a spiked loincloth instead of an axe.

Yeah, it's a really good idea to make a cloak a standard part of every military outfit.

I wonder. Do dwarves even need their ears? I imagine if you could amputate them, you could effectively increase the armour covering, as they wouldn't be present to be injured in battle. Hmm.

Leather Armor supposedly protects the face. What have they got on their torso?

I've tried putting leather armor on them, it didn't help. They already have chainmail on their upper body... I'll try the cloak thing and come back...

Leather Armour does not protect the face.  The armour item 'cloak', will protect the face, and is usually recommended to be made out of leather.  Therefore if your dwarf is wearing leather armour that includes a cloak in the set, they'll have facial protection.  People tend to talk about a dwarf with metal armour and/or leather armour, by which they mean a set of items made of metal, or leather, as opposed to the specific item Leather Armour.

Specifically, Leather Armour has UBSTEP 1, which means it will cover the neck/throat, but no more above that.

Earless dorfs would be better than 'armless ones, I guess.

They also don't need teeth.
But IIRC, ear wounds can be almost terminal, it is quite annoying if they never heal, but they are just fine with their toothless status.

Having a cloak has fixed the face wounding problem, unfortunately the sworddwarf already has a ruined ear which is infected (they were in the hospital for... reasons 0_0). Hopefully their healing will be fast enough that they won't die from the infection, but at least now if they do the next swordsdwarf won't get mutilated...
