Miasma Outdoors
« on: December 23, 2014, 01:55:39 pm »

Hello everyone - I'm still pretty new to playing Dwarf Fortress. I finally have a fortress that is coming along well. From experience and from reading various sources, I've kept my butcher's shop and refuse stockpiles outside. I guess I exceeded my refuse stockpile's capacity and there were a lot of butchered meat sitting around in the shop ( I assume my dwarves weren't cooking them quickly enough) and suddenly the butcher's workshop exploded with Miasma. I created a new, bigger refuse stockpile, also above ground, but it has not fixed the problem.

I'm playing DW v.34.11, the one with the newb pack.

I don't get it, it's quite bad.

I don't know about that version but earlier and newer version will create miasma if your butchers workshop is in side so if you have built a roof over it it counts as inside. unlike plants it needs to actually be able to see the sky also meat shouldn't go into a refuse stockpile it should go into your food stockpile in barrels bins or pots and if it goes there it wont spoil. food and carcasses are the only things that spoil and if you have the dwarfs moving the food to a stockpile it'll last indefinitely. Id definitely recommend up dating your dwarf fortress version though lots of stuff has improved and that might be a bug specific to that version.

Does your butcher happen to stand below a tree branch or something? Because that will be regarded as inside. Which means Misama coming.

I assume that any food going into refuse are rotted and not eatable. No, there is no roof over the butcher shop. But even if there is a cause for the shop to be considered "inside", that can't be applied to the refuse pile, right? It is in the wide, wide open. It is a forested area, but...

Forrested area means that there could be tree branches which create a natural ceiling. doesnt matter how high up they are either.

He's playing DF34.11 though, so no branches.

Use the 't' cursor to check what's in the butcher's workshop. Or 'k' cursor to check what's around that area. Once the offending items have been removed miasma should stop emanating. Try disassembling the butcher's workshop if rotten stuff is stuck there and it will spill out. You can then designate any tiles with rotten stuff on them as a refuse stockpile and haulers won't even need to haul that. If all else fails, try atom smasher and using the dump command.
