No immigrants? :(
« on: December 05, 2014, 09:36:10 am »

Just got the new version of DF, I have some (~50hours) of playing experience. My problem is that i simply don't get any immigrants. None. I've been reading up on the immigrant mechanic and i can't find the answer for the lack of new dwarfs to my fortress. It simply says: "no new immigrants this season" or something like that when a new immigrant wave is due. My fort isn't all that poor and my dwarfs are pretty happy. . .
Something like 5-6 waves of immigrants have been completely empty, come to think of it i only got the scripted wave in the beginning, and maybe two or three dwarfs after that. I'm using LNP with the Phoebus graphicspack and i've checked the STRICT_POPULATION_CAP setting in both the original gamefiles and the Phoebus file. Any ideas?

how much wealth has your fort generated exactly? I think it's the current wealth that matters.

Are you sure your civilization isn't extinct? If there are no other sites in your civ, there's nowhere to attract dwarfs from.

This isn't entirely true.  You are hard-coded to always get the first two immigrant waves.  After that you are indeed SoL if your civilization is extinct.  On the plus side you get a lazy good for nothing king in your first couple of waves this way :D

Sadly I don't think there is a good way to check if your civ is extinct or not... however with the "invaders always win" bug a few versions ago, it was much more rampant (Goblins on the warpath depopulating the map).

I think the total value is around 100k, have to check exactly tomorrow.  As far as i can tell my civ shouldn't be extinct, when i check other civs i can view the different dwarf nobles (residing over their respective cities/holdings i presume). I'll have to doublecheck both, to be sure.
Theres also this merchant that left all his stuff in my tradepost and has resorted to wander around my fort ever since he came, dont know what thats all about. . . merchants still come and when his race shows up (i thinks hes an elf), he meets up at the tradepost for a while then gets back to doing nothing :P

If your civilization is dead, shouldn't one of your dorf have become a king so far?

OK so my bookkeeper died deep underground due to some half-expected (and extremely deadly) FUN, but i've got a new one up and running from my small squad of survivors.
The fort is worth around 180k, bu the bookkeeper is brand new so don't know how accurate that number is.
It appears that there is another dwarf hold alive, i can access their tab on the civilizations screen and lots of names of nobles and whatnot pops up.
Do you guys think it is worth while to wait and see if i can maybe get new immigrants while building up the worth of the fort or is it a lost cause? I have 12 dwarfs left and 9 children. . .

I'd say a small population is not a problem in itself, as it just means it takes longer to do things, but you need to be more careful and be prepared to turtle at the slightest hint of problems. It also means you will have to depend more on mechanical defenses than a fighting force, possibly devicing these while turtled up. It can also mean you might lose caravans to besieging enemies while you're building the defenses needed to counter the threat.
So:
- Is it possible?: Definitely!
- Will you have fun doing it?: That very much depends on your play style and what parts of DF you enjoy.

Made the decision  to start a new fortress, reasoned that i could keep playing but i feel like the severe limit in hauling capacity and the general lack of dwarfs isn't worth it. Generated a new world entirely, hope i dont run into the same problem again :/

I have another side of this problem:
I want to use ONLY two embark waves, so I gnerate worlds without any (except goblins, sometimes) alive civs. It means: no alive dwarves (even necromancers), elves, humans, kobolds. All places are cleaned with FBs 200-500 years ago.

But when I start - in the first year caravan arrives without liason (even on only-elven island without any caves), in the second year liason arrives, all 3 waves of migrants are arrives.
Can it be fixed somehow?
