Strange Mining behavior - VERY bad
« on: January 10, 2015, 11:17:18 am »

Hello everybody,

in my recent game my miners behave very strangely:

they mine one or two tiles and then return to the stairway, then repeat
they are actually not doing anything in between just it seems that this greatly reduces the mining speed.
It is just normal soil walls

I have no idea why they are doing this. On other places it seems to work.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated

Are they hungry? If you have no food in the fortress and dwarfs are hungry they exhibit behavior like that. Walking away after mining 1 square.

yes this was the exact behaviour

yet it is only 2 months into the new game and I have plenty of food from Embark

EDIT:

as you see here

the Dwarf A is returning to Stairway as it does not have a designated tile to mine

the Dwarf B is currently mining a tile but will also return after

both are still doing the DIG job its not that they are at "No Job" now

it seems like they don't get their followup tile to dig allocated fast enough

What version are you using? This sounds like a bug that was introduced in 0.40.20 and fixed in 0.40.22

The exact bug was, that for automatically chaining to nearby similar jobs, dwarves only considered jobs on the same z-level as themselves. Once they finished all the nearby mining on their z-level, they would stop for a few steps while looking for a new job (which frequently would be the similar job at z+/-1)

anybody knows what is wrong?

EDIT: OK as soon as I remove the second Z level from designated mining they are doing fine again

Their poor little dwarven brains can't handle so many possible jobs at once

even if I have only 10 tiles at 4 levels each they get confused... I really can only ever mine one level at a time

Isn't this the same thing that's always been there where they will mine things from left to right and from up to down(If I'm not mistakened) and those coordinates take priority over z-levels?

You can probably fix this by making all the mining in one level priority 1, all the mining in another level priority 2 and so on.

In any case, it's not game breaking, just annoying

In new versions it is better, at least I can tell them to carve a square hall first instead of digging in random worm holes pattern.
Still, multiple miners can be a problem.

Do they have any other labors enabled?

If they have any hauling labors on that might be what's going wrong. After mining nearby tiles they check for more jobs, see hauling, go for it, then digging jobs pops up, that takes priority so they go to dig, repeat.
