Well...

I was doing a test of a defensive measure on my fort - the entrance has a little stone "box" around it, sealed by a drawbridge.   The merchants had left a short while ago.  I declared an alarm to get all my dwarves inside, pulled the lever, drawbridge closes.  Success right?

Except a few seconds later, the map was showered with *dozens* of items - some of which I had sold the dwarven merchants, some of which I had purchased from them, some of which I hadn't.  Overall well over a hundred items fell.   The only explanation would be that a wagon got launched into the air by the drawbridge but *there wasnt any more wagons*.

Took a while to clear up the mess too sheesh.

I had this happen recently, too. Right after unloading goods, the trader wagon scuttled and they all left. I didn't have any hostile creatures on the map, my trade depot was in a wide-open area, and no combat reports. I'm reasonably sure it was as Zuglarkun mentioned; the nearby corpse stockpile horrified the visitors. It seems to horrify my resident dwarves at random from time to time when they walk on or near it.

It hasn't happened since, but I still think I'll move the stockpile just to be safe.

The number of people who complain about wagonloads of stuff being suddenly available to them is always astounding to me. I really don't understand why some people describe merchants as carrying "trash". I utterly love the variety of food and drink that arrives by wagon...

Horrified theory makes sense, considering that wagons scuttle when the merchant 'driving' them sustain wounds etc.

Still, free stuff  :D

I accidentally built my trade depot on top of a boulder (which wagons can't cross). I thought the depot would remove the boulder, but instead it just messed up the wagon's pathing so as to run it straight over the damn thing.

Horrified might be it.

I had mechant wagons disappear when it started raining dwarven blood in the bad part of my embark that they were trekking through.

well, it's a delicate balance, if they have an accident, they tend to bring less stuff next time. And it could be stuff you want. Or I would just decon the depot every time.

Also, I don't want elven weapons or human clothing trashing up my fortress.
