In a time before time, The Father began wandering the depths of the world.

So in this scenario, would malaria be religion? I kind of like that.

As the hood was pulled from his head, Alatha the elven thief made a brief survey of his surroundings. First check: no gallows, guillotines, archers or large angry men with swords. Made superficial sense. As well as the local rubes had been treating him in the week since his capture, turning around and killing him outright would be ridiculous. Anyway, most of these humans looked far too sickly to be capable of killing him if it came to it. He'd never seen so many thin, sweaty people in one place. It had taken a whole mob of them to overpower him, and even then Alatha was sure he could've escaped if not for the untimely loss of his dagger.

And then they had proceeded to treat him like royalty! He had been fed three times a day on the finest meats these meagre peasants could scrounge, and given elaborate baths in clean water that they surely could not spare. His last bath had been just this morning in fact, and accompanied by a pumice scrub that had left his skin a healthy pink and maybe just a touch too sensitive. If this was the horrible fate that awaited all thieves in this town, he couldn't wait to see what was next.

Second check: Alatha and his captors stood just inside a square courtyard, open to the full force of the midday sun, stone walls worn with age and lichen. The ground was muddy and uneven, with frequent pools of standing water. In the center was a simple wooden cage and a set of restraints. Somewhere, on the edge of silence, Alatha thought he could hear a high-pitched whine.

A smallish human wearing an elaborate headdress stepped forward and confronted Alatha, slowly unbinding a leather strap from her wrist. She raised it up above her head, uttered a high piercing call and brought it sharply across Alatha's cheek.

Too surprised to react, Alatha stood dumb as this action was repeated across his left upper arm. As the strap raised once more he tried to flinch back, only to be held in place by half a dozen guards. Three more times and the odd ritual was done. The human turned away from Alatha and looked out across the courtyard, where the strikings had given rise to a furious response.

Third check: Mosquitos. Uncountable millions, rising from the mud and the water. And in their center, a cage and restraints.

Alatha, realization upon him, made one last feeble attempt to break free. To no avail. A guard knocked his legs from under him and Alatha fell to his knees behind the silent priestess. She turned, looking down with a mocking grin at her captive.

"Here you will die. Our goddess has claimed you, and so you go to her. Cry out if you must; pray for deliverance or mercy. You will find nothing but her voice and her hunger." Every word from the mouth of the priestess seemed to Alatha to echo across the courtyard, joining and multiplying the hideous whine of a thousand thousand tiny wings. "In the end, like all before you, you will pray only for her silence."
