Hair and Skin Variety.
« on: December 14, 2014, 09:21:16 pm »

Last time i played each civ had only one skin and hair colour, I was wondering if they have fixed this yet? I was working on a mod that created a cast for every single hair and skin colour variation but it was so time consuming and I messed up the first time (( cause in fortress mode it never listed the dwarves skin tone for some reason )) and so I had to do it all over again except with the skin and hair listed in there description just to be safe... anyway I just wanted to know if its been fixed and if not, if somebody else has already modded it in so I dont have to.. honestly its probably the first thing that should be modded in before anything else as this is a massive problem, making everyone look the same.

What?! Really? Shit they really fixed it? Entire civs used to be defined by a single ethnicity, one skin tone and one hair shade for everyone inside a specific civ.

We have to sleep sometime.

...

And yeah, I'm 90% sure the "one hair/eye/skin colour for a civ" was a bug early in the entity cultures development. IIRC, it should vary between civilisations, but not quite so dramatically.

Hard science is like a sword, and soft science is like fear. You can use both to equally powerful results, but even if your opponent disbelieve your stabs, they will still die.

XD  I want to get a Pokeball tattoo on my arm, but everyones always like "Girls who tattoo look bad! dont ruin your skin!"  But its a pokeball.. those are cool!

^ __ ^   anyway,  Iam glad there is more veriety now.. I am super weird when I play this game, I document every single little aspect of my world, so every titan, religion, flag, demon, king, queen, royalty in general, I list my worlds history, sooo for the sake of ease i usually only use 1 or 2 civs for each race, and having a entire civ of one skin and hair and eye can really hurt the experience... since everyone will kinda look the same, the only humans in the world would be maybe a race of tan skinned blonde people with purple eyes XD

I played the game RIGHT after the update to the new version that took like a year or so to make, so I expected there to be a lot of bugs to work out, but it was like that the prior year before the update as well, so i wasnt sure if that was going to be something they were planning on fixing.

I know how you feel. I've spent last days modding just many flavor things of the game, like hair and beard styles and lengths and clothes. It's still a bit shame how DF creates very unified style for every civilization instead of greater ethic randomization. I really want to be able to create randomized civilizations some day.

I was talking to Toady and he said he would be willing to put in a new tag that if removed will remove the standardization of one skin and hair colour, just send him a message asking him for it and if enough people do it he is open to suggestion.

Probably best not to message-spam the Toad. The suggestion board is the place to go for that.

The way genetics works for coloration is that the poofed-out-of-thin-air creatures use the relative frequencies in the raws, but historical figures will choose colors from those of their parents.  And colors that appear earlier in the creatures raws are dominant... so it's easy to get uniform coloration among historical figures in a long history.  Since there is no intermarriage between civs, given long enough each civ will gravitate to its own coloration.

The tag you mentioned might control inheritance, genetic dominance, or both.
