uses for changelings?

forgive me for overlooking this in the threads, but i have basically put changelings on the back burner for some time, usually butchering them when they come in on caravans, but i notice occasionally one will turn into a random creature when the caravan is still in transit to my depot, i was wondering, is there a way to capitalize on this more, or is it merely coincidental when they change?

They transform into "familiars" like basilisks or unicorns when a magic dwarf sees them, so if you're focusing on magic in your fort you'll probably want a good sized herd of changelings.

i have them pastured at the moment in my egg hatchery, behind closed doors, should i move them to my meeting hall? but keeping a breeding pair hidden?
