No no, a plain ramp with track "EW" works fine. You said you had an "E" ramp there, which simply doesn't count as a ramp for the minecart engine - it only has connection to a floor and not to a wall. Since there's a wall just to the west of the tile, extending the track on the ramp to the W border is enough. Ramps don't need corners to accelerate carts, they only need the proper track connections.

PS: i made a thing about minecart physics a while ago. Ramps are right in the first post, second half:

It's rather on the advanced reading side, i'm afraid.

I want to learn how to use minecarts to bring magma to the upper levels.

There are several topics on this already, but none are noob friendly. By 'noob friendly' I mean consisting of clear and precise instructions with clear and precise screenshots/ascii examples. No assumptions that the reader knows anything about minecarts or can decipher your graphics/tileset.

If you only need a little magma (e.g. for some magma-powered workshops), you might try my method. If anything the instructions are too detailed. It doesn't require power, doesn't use impulse ramps, and is reasonably fast (you could have magma forges running before the first dwarven caravan arrives).
