I just started a new fort and this time I went and started in a cold area and I wonder how many ways are there to melt ice to get water from a frozen river?

I know of lava and I found info on some way on doing it with a cave in and I wonder if there are any other ways.

While its frozen, dig out a cistern.  When it melts in the warm weather the cistern will fill.  And not freeze.  If the ice never melts you'd best start looking cavernside.  Or aquifers

Out of curiosity (since my current fort isn't set up to test this), what happens to an ice boulder that melts from bringing it indoors? Muddy tile, pool of water, 1/7 depth water, something stranger?

Water as an item.  Think adventure mode water in your hand.  Except not usable.  At all.  For anything.  Driftwood has more use, in that its interesting to look at.
