Re-attracting migrants after a massacre
« on: December 11, 2014, 03:11:24 pm »

My terrifying biome fortress has had a total of 262 deaths over its thirteen years, and, quite reasonably, migrants have declined to come for the last few years.  Will I ever get more migrants now that things have stabilized and become more peaceful?  Three dwarf caravans have come and left, and I have increased my created wealth by a couple million dwarfbucks.  Is my loss of migrants permanent?

Unless your civ is extinct you can't permanently lose migrants, they will eventually come back as long you avoid further tragedies.
This could take a few years though and there will likely be less than normal.
Making sure the dwarven caravans get away safely will help with attracting migrants, as they are the ones who report your generated wealth.

Welcome to Dwarf Fortress. Where peaceful death of old age is something nobody sees coming.
it turns out Dog Bone Doctors aren't very good at doctoring.

Weird, I had a fortress where half the population died and we were in the middle of a siege and migrants still came, but that was in .34, so it may have been changed (or the tragedies were too sudden to count)

262 death in 13 years is not too much even in normal surrounding.

I think there's a formula including wealth generated, deaths, and so on and so forth. So how quickly you start getting migrants again would depend on how well other aspects of your fort are doing.

And don't forget to actually send stuff with the caravans, stories are nice but not everyone in mountain home will believe you have prosperity if you don't sell anything...

I've heard that when it comes to fortress wealth all that counts is what you've generated since the last caravan came, not the total. Might help to make some wood crafts while you wait.
