In my previous fortress all i had was a nefarious mist that caused minor paralysis with short exposure. In my current fortress i have a Heinous Gloom that instantly huskifies any living creature it touches, so obviously it is far more serious with the fortress on lock-down during these events. I want to create my barracks outdoors with a clear view to the sky to prevent my soldiers becoming cave adapted, but having the mist climb over the wall is a serious risk. How many Z-levels above ground level would i need to make the wall to prevent the mist climbing over it?

I don't have any useful input but I did want to note that your question reminded me of the mathematical story problems I used to get in elementary school.

"Now, class, can you tell me the rate at which a catapult would fire if manned by an adept siege operator, assuming it is firing granite stones and he doesn't need to eat or sleep?

How many legendary brewers would it take to convert 500 plump helmets into wine in less that a week?

If a minecart loaded with 4 blocks of marble were to travel down a 10 z-level ramp, just how dead would the miner sleeping at the bottom be?

I'm pretty sure weather patterns start at the top and drift down, rather than starting at the bottom and climb up. I've never seen mist or fog move through an open doorway into the fort proper, in any case, so a simple ceiling should keep most of it out.

A ceiling will mean cave adaptation will not be reversed, so i need there to be no roof for direct sunlight. Fog can climb up 3 Z-levels which i have seen before and move to the other side. So i was wondering how high i need to build the wall, 5 Z-levels? 10?

Can you use a glass ceiling to prevent cave adaption?

Alternatively, for a more dwarfy solution use a retractable bridge as a ceiling with some kind of linkage to a trigger that fires when the Gloom shows up.  Perhaps an animal standing on a properly configured pressure plate could act as a canary in the coal mine.  Animal on plate keeps bridge open. If it steps off the bridge closes.   What happens when the animal gets huskified?

This assumes two things: 1) that the Gloom arrives in a predictable manner, and 2) you won't mind losing a lot of your soldiers when it inevitably fails.

I don't believe ceilings made of glass actually let any light through. Bridges would probably work though.

Is there an announcement when evil fog shows up? I lack experience when it comes to making forts in areas of dwarf melting poor weather.

If there is ample warning, you can just link the bridges to a lever and close up when needed. A "canary" system would probably be far more dwarfy though. Just not quite sure how to set such a thing up.

I think the easy solution is to put up a roof, of any material. As far as I understand, cave adaptation is caused by not encountering any "sunlight" conditions, and those conditions remain after a roof is put up, so you can e.g. grow surface crops under a roof, as long as the tile has ever been exposed to the exterior.

1. Cave adaptation only increases when in a subterranean area (i.e. never exposed to the sky).
2. Cave adaptation only decreases (and triggers) when outside (i.e. no roof).
The original poster is concerned about #2, so building a roof will negate the benefit.

I'm fairly certain that bridges will not work.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.
