Unretiring Fortress leaves passive dwarves
« on: December 11, 2014, 05:33:51 pm »

I had a fortress of about 20-30 dwarves. All was well, but the daily routine was beginning to be a drag so I retired the fortress and went off to kill a king or two. After leaving it and returning in about a year gametime, I now have 1 new dwarf and two humans (all 3 military) just passively standing around my fortress, resilient to my control. One of the ambient humans has also somehow managed to become my Hammerer. In Legends it tells me that 7 humans, 3 dwarves and an elf migrated roughly a season ago but it still doesn't give me authority to give them work. Not only that, but it would seem that I'm missing 5 humans, 2 dwarves and my elf buddy.  :'(

Is this a known glitch about unretiring fortresses?

Not taht I know of, perhaps you should write a bug report, but I do know that when I reclaimed a fortress (about three years after it was abandoned) there were still two merchants from the caravan that was there when we left hanging around, as well as a bunch of corpses which I assume is the rest of the caravan... they are still here, and I basically use them to stand watch when my dwarves are busy working... I wonder how long I can keep them alive...

I'm not sure if it is a bug or feature.
But you can play as an adventurer later and start from/enter your retired fortress and there can be many things happen there: new NPCs, new factions, wars, merchants, etc...

So during the time you are absent, your fortress is still developing.

On the other hand, not being able to control some of the dwarves may not be intentional.

Not controlling humans or elves isn't really a bug, as I don't think that multi-racial fort support has been added yet.

They can even die or go berserk. I want to know what happened during my absence, a civil war, perhaps? ::)

Well, I've crashed a season in about 4 times now... It must be a bug. On each occasion of reloading I would have a different set of inhabitants... sometimes I would have a couple more dwarves here and there... sometimes some of the dwarves were actually controllable! But the constant crashing has really got my hopes down so I think I'll just avoid unretiring for now.

Thanks for the input!

I'm currently looking into that. My tentative conclusion is that reclaiming an abandoned fortress may be safer than unretiring a retired fortress. (Although abandoning a fortress has its downsides).
