Problems piercing through aquifer with Double-Slit Method
« on: December 08, 2014, 06:35:48 pm »

So... I'm pretty much slow creating my military and decided to embark into an island to avoid sieges. That way, I would only be attacked by HFS and caverns.

The island however has an aquifer, and I don't know how to deal with them. I've tried lots of techniques with no success, so now I'm trying again the Double-Slit method http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Double-slit_method. Here you can see the situation right now:

As you can see the first level (Level 1) is the surface and the two following levels (Level 2 and 3) are dry aquifer-less ground. The aquifer starts at Level 4. So, just as the guide says, I drained the aquifer in that level and prepared to repeat the process in Level 5.

Just as before, I pumped water from left to right (as seen in Lvl 4) so my miners could access Lvl 5 and build Up/Down stairs in Lvl 6. Then, I stopped pumping water to repeat the process in the right side.

(Originally, when I had done this exact process above (beginning from Lvl 3), the water that accumulated in Lvl 4 had drained to Lvl 5 giving me the chance to have Lvl 4 walled up.)

However, when I built Up/Down stairs in level 6, and turned off the Screw Pump the water in Lvl 5 continued to be at a 7/7 Level.

Now, I don't how to continue the aquifer piercing, I don't know what I did wrong or if the soil isn't appropiate for this method or what.

So, does anybody know what could I be doing wrong with this? I'm just really lost, and I don't know how to pass through this aquifer.

I don't know if this helps, but my version is 0.40.19 with a world I created in 0.40.14, I think.

Thanks in advance, for any kind help that you can offer me.

It looks like the stone in level 6 isn't an aquifer stone (sandstone, conglomerate, or puddingstone), and if thats the case it can't drain off the water. So I think you have only a single layer aquifer left and you need to move to the "Dealing with the lowest aquifer level" section.

Are you sure? Because Lvl 6 and 7 are still marked as "Damp". :-\

Okay, I'll give it a try. I'm now testing it.

Thanks for the reply!  :D

Edit:

So, I've checked what Patchy said an it seem he was right, except it was Lvl 5 the first non-aquifer stone. That's because it was made of Silty Clay, which according to the Aquifer wiki article (Link) cannot contain an aquifer despite what its name suggests.

So, I've followed the "Dealing with the lowest aquifer level" section and I've achieved to pass through the aquifer, finally!!!

I've invested so much time trying to pierce it, that my population escalated to 55 dwarves, so it's been a while! :P

Thanks for the help, Patchy! :D
