On embark screen I have shallow metals.  So far no metal, but plenty of cobalite.  Cobalt is a metal but we cant smelt it in df.  Same with cinabar (ore of quick silver which would be cool as hell).  Do those count as the metals i was promised?

I don't know because cobalt mines out as the asterisk shape. But it isn't a metal, really, and you can't make anything with it that you can make with ores.

I think maybe cinnabar becoming quicksilver would be a process the dwarves aren't advanced enough for. That's just a guess, I know nothing about the process.

Cinnabar is pretty poisonous by itself, though, so you'd think that (and things like lead flasks) would affect your dwarves adversely.

It's probably some vein of gold off to the side.

For DF though, cinnabar and cobaltite aren't metal veins, even though they technically contain metals in the form of mercury and cobalt.

Cobaltite makes pretty good flooring for areas where you want to maximize fall damage, like at the bottom of a dodgeme trap or a death pit. But other than that it's pretty useless since cobaltite objects weigh down haulers and it isn't even worth much.
