Was there a bug regarding grazers in cages?
« on: December 06, 2014, 07:41:19 am »

I vaguely remember that there was a bug that caused grazers in cages to never need to eat, is that true?

The best way to demonstrate it to him is take a save of 40 year old fortress with 150 dwarves in it on a good sized embark with a volcano that just breached the circus and install it on his gaming rig and watch it bring his rig to its knees.

I don't know if there has been such a bug, but in older versions no animals ever needed food. Nowadays grazers will starve in cages, though.

I'm not aware of any cage-specific oddities.
The only animals that need food (and can die of starvation) are grazers that are members of your fort.

Consequently, wild animals, mounts of enemies, caravan pack animals and animals brought by caravans need no food. Caravan pack animals will still starve to death when they go insane. Animals brought for sale become fort members when you buy them and wild animals when you tame them.

AFAIK this hasn't changed in the .40 versions. You can exploit this behaviour by not taming captured large grazers and keeping them in cages or locked pens. I had some success breeding "wild" rhinoceroi and draltha in .34.11, keeping them in stone-floor rooms without any plant growth.
