A Healthcare Question, or, "Fun with Syndromes."
« on: December 04, 2014, 06:10:55 pm »

So I had a Bristleworm Forgotten Beast called "Setnek Rashzimun the Bloated Blister."
He came and killed a few cave swallows, then headed for my fortress, and then my Macelord killed it with a punch to the head.
Unfortunately, she breathed in the poisonous gas ol' Bloated Blister breathed out. It causes mild numbness all over her body, and then she started vomiting uncontrollably, and then she began to REST on the stairwell on her way back upstairs. It took a good two minutes AFTER she killed the beast for this to take hold.

It's like she's in a coma. Here is what I know:
1. She rested on the stairwell, and will not get up, nor will anyone move her to the hospital.

2. She has no injuries that I can see, just that she "needs diagnosis."

3. There's a full staff at the hospital, with nothing to do but treat people. I've got 4 different "doctors" with the diagnosing skill. But nobody will budge to help her. There's nothing wrong with the hospital either, as it's helped at least 5 dwarfs in the fort's lifetime.

4. I built a cage trap under her, and then put her cage in the hospital. I attached a lever to it, then pulled the lever. Now she just "Rests" on the floor. Still, nobody will help her.

5. Nobody is busy. I've literally got a fortress of 123 with no jobs, just to see if anyone can help.

My solution?

I'm going to shoot a ballista at her. I'm going to wound her, in hopes that someone will take her to the hospital, and hopefully that will get her diagnosed. Hopefully she doesn't get too mangled...

Do any of you fine people have an idea as to what is wrong? Or if this has already been reported?

Ok, the only thing that worked was dropping a boulder on her.

Shattered her lower leg, but she's in the hospital now!   :P

I have four dorfs in the hospital right now. They have been in hospital for several years: The baroness for 4 years, the other three for 3 years each. They were last attended to medically two dorf years ago, with stitches and fabric bandages, and plaster casts. I have two dorfs with everything turned off except healthcare, from diagnosis onward. They do nothing. I have deconstructed and reconstructed stuff around them for years. Nothing helps, although I can make them move beds.

I turned off the hospital, and the three who are capable of walking went downstairs to the newly made hospital in dining room #2. The Baroness just lay there, then switched beds in the no-longer-a-hospital, then lay there. I turned the hospital back on, and the three walking wounded all trooped upstairs again.

Recently, there was finally some progress. Someone (not the two docs) cleaned the wounds on three of them, which was great, as they were all suffering from infections.

...Hospitals are funny places in Dwarf Fortress.

My hospital runs pretty well. Though sometimes when I was not watching, they suture using adamantine threads.

Well, I think I'm back to square one now.

She's got a cast on her leg, and is unconscious in the hospital bed. But it says she is "on break."

Hell, she very well may be in a coma. Who knows. At least she's in the right place.

I think the syndromes for FB's are randomized, but it appears that it contains a little Cave floater sickness (long term drowsiness), but I don't think your hospital can help with that...

You may just have to wait it out and hope she wakes up while the dwarves keep her alive with food and drink...

Huh, whereas a miner who was dropped multiple z-levels and had a broken spine got up and FINISHED MINING before going to the doctors. She then was back on her feet with only a single thread holding together her spinal tissue.

My hospitals are a model of efficiency I guess.  :D

Yeah that's what I'm going to do. She keeps changing into her military form when her squad goes on patrol, and her job says "station" or "patrol" yet she's unconscious in bed.

This fort is getting boring anyways. I only get like 11 goblins to attack me each year. This year, I only got ONE GOBLIN MACEMAN. He arrived, and then 5 seconds later, he left the map.

I did however, get some good out of this fort: I learned how to use pump stacks the "right" way, and I made tame Drunians!
I'm going to leave this world alone for now, but use it for testing new ideas, like minecart tracks and what not.

Such badassery should not go unrewarded :)

Yes, that's some serious skills on your doctors' parts too. Holding it together with thread? That's some high quality thread and some tedious sewing!
