Vegetarian vampires
« on: December 05, 2014, 07:10:05 am »

People cursed with vampirism who have high enough willpower and strong enough ethics could be appalled by their condition and choose feed on non-sentients instead of sentients.

An adventurer might be sent to investigate cattle deaths in a town.
When ousted as a night creature these people should be relatively apologetic and actually have a chance at yielding to explain their predicament.
It'll give the adventurer a choice: Cash in his head for easy money, or let him go because by what measure is he a monster.
If the adventurer is persuasive enough he could even recruit the poor sod in search of a cure for his affliction.

And also Urist complaining to the guard captain that “Bomrek ate my cat.”

Also, they could drink from barrels of blood.

My first thought on reading the title, 'vampires that drink plant juices?'.

If they eat animals they aren't vegetarian though.

I think a more proper title would be "ethical vampirism" because as other posters have pointed out drinking cow blood isn't exactly vegetarian.

Nonetheless, this is a cool idea and I like it. It would make vampire quests have more variety then just finding and killing a person. If the player helped to find a cure as OP described then he could also offer it to or force it down the throats of other vampires he meets instead of killing them.

It would also be funny if like-minded ethical vampires occasionally banded togather into groups, like a remote mountain village where everyone is a vampire but they keep large herds of goats for the blood so they don't have to kill or bite people.

Changes to how vampires respond in general would be nice. And how you call them out. I mean, sometimes you might just want to ask them to stop?

It makes sense even for less ethical vampires to snack often and lightly or on animals, for their own sake if nothing else. Leaving a trail of corpses and disappearances seems ill-advised.

I was assuming people would recognize Vegetarian Vampires as being a trope.

Seems like a good idea. Maybe some sort of nutritional value system should be implemented so that vampires get stronger if they drink more suitable blood?

Isn't vampirism meant to be a curse? If the ethical part of it could be so easily averted it would simply be a free ticket to immortality. Sounds more like a blessing.
The curse about vampirism is that you have an insatiable desire for the blood of your fellow man (or dwarf or elf) selectively and brutally murdering those closest and dearest to you in an uncontrollable blood lust. The difference in the blood between an animal and a sentient being is just that, the vampire absorbs the sentience and life force of its victim in order to remain both sentient and alive rather than wither to dust and ashes.

Writing this response has given me the idea that if a vampire would resort to drinking the blood of an animal, they would gain no sentience - slowly withering away at the mind, becoming like those it hunts. Wild.

The fine text behind this is that those which do drink the blood of those like them eventually go mad due to guilt (or something of the sort) becoming like wild animals in their own way while remaining sentient.

It is a curse after all.

Vampires are cursed with the lust for blood, so you'd think it'd be the other way around. Those giving in to the curse becoming feral, while those feeding on non-sentients retaining their humanity better.
How they deal with their hunger should be up to the individual. After all, if they're intelligent enough to masquerade as, and hold jobs as villagers, they would be intelligent enough to understand their affliction.

The thing is that becoming feral doesn't seem worse than death, while being forced to watch your self kill your friends does.
