Liberal/Conservative Cars?
« on: October 29, 2014, 10:21:42 am »

So I played some LCS yesterday, and thought about the cars. There are pickup trucks and vans, that would use more gas and are larger. That is quite Conservative, slower, and better armor. But there are beetle and sports cars that are more Liberal, use less gas, are faster, and have less armor. Wouldn't it make sense that a more Liberal America would have more Liberal cars, and vice versa?

It's such a small thing but I think it would add quite a bit of flavor

Actually no it's not. Imagine if the conservative police were chasing you in moderate America. It'd take a medium amount of time to escape, and the cops are medium hard to shoot down. Now in a more Conservative America, the cops are easier to speed away from, but they shoot with big guns and are harder to destroy. Some cars would be very suspicious to drive in the outskirts during different political Americas. Near the CEOS Residence? That hippie car looks worrying. That true blue Amercan Pickup Truck? Must be a proud Conservative! Cars speak a lot about the drivers, and it is equally true in politics. Especially in a satire game set in either Maoist or Fascist America

Police cars are peppy cars.

'Conservative' cars are cars for civilians. Police cars will be police cars regardless of whether the country is liberal or conservative. The only difference for police cars is how militarized the police are, which will affect how many vans, etc. they have in addition to ordinary police cruisers. Police will always have cruisers: they're small, economical, and fast.

Really the thing is how do you tell the player that:

Conservative Cars are massive black lumps of detroit iron strait out of malaise era, engines are massive lumps thats sound of thunder and guzzle fuel.

Spoiler: Evil car (click to show/hide)

Liberal cars are painted with flowers and run on the power of national socialist engineering are old volkswagens.
Cars have souls man, you just got to treat them right brother.

Basicy Liberals have seen Herbie the Love Bug one to many times.
Spoiler: Good car (click to show/hide)

Agree, plus that's about the LAST thing *I* want to see from this kind of game - author spending valuable development time on useless graphics.

Sports cars are more conservative (elitist capitalist symbol). VW bugs and old VW vans are the ideal liberal items though.

LCS is all about contradictions though as well as keeping it real in the liberal sense. Big guns are very conservative, yet the LCS uses them 'liberally'. They have a comical "ends justifies the means" logic. So there's no real thematic problem with the LCS using rich person cars for getaways from bank robberies, that's just turning The Man's tools against him.

The best way to implement car alignment would be to shift the car types you see as laws shift to L+. At L+ even the rednecks and cops should be driving Toyota Prius' and Nissan Leafs.

I've posted some car ideas here:

Haven't quite gotten around to implementing much of it however.

I'm not sure if it would be fun to introduce a mechanical difference but it might be fun to introduce a cosmetic difference here. I think making this a full-fledged mechanic would be a little confusing because unlike a lot of the things that change as political alignment does, (cop type, site names) this isn't something you can check voluntarily or have the opportunity to check very often, and I can't think of a natural way to inform the player of them.

You could have a dealership full of crappy gas guzzlers that vanishes based on environmental law or something, maybe.

It could just be an opinion stuck onto the opinion polls. Or just based on environmental law, as you said.

An easy thing to add is more description on the car chases.

What kind of truck just pulled out in front of you?
Does the car roar forward or hum with power?
What kind of business' lots are you cutting through?  (parking lot vs carpool site vs bus terminal?)

PS:
I've been working on improved car details this weekend.
Quote from: LCS
As you pull away from the site, you notice that you are being followed by Conservative swine!
Jodi Lake shoots at Police Gang Unit with a .38 Revolver!
The attack bounces off the Cruiser's window to no effect.
Police Gang Unit shoots at Jodi Lake with a Shotgun!
The attack bounces off the Sport's body to no effect.

Jodi Lake shoots at Police Gang Unit with a .38 Revolver!
Jodi Lake hits his left leg through the Cruiser's body.

Police Gang Unit shoots at Jodi Lake with a Shotgun!
Police Gang Unit hits her head.  Note: Sport car has the top down, so there are no windows to give token protection.
Jodi Lake's left eye is blasted out!

Jodi Lake shoots at Police Gang Unit with a .38 Revolver!
Jodi Lake hits his head through the Cruiser's window.
Police Gang Unit shouts "FATHER!  Why have you forsaken me?" and dies in a heap.
I realize its the cheapest weakest gun in the game, and the RNG does some funny things, but wow that was a poor shot.
Both were wearing body armor, and benefiting from the car's protection to their legs, so the fights tended to be a series of lightly bleeding arm and leg wounds until the pain caused a critical dodge failure and a headshot or car crash.
