I once fought a forgotten beast that spat balls of flaming fire and for some reason or other those burned my leather shields :'(
Lost most of my (poorly trained) military and a few civilian conscripts to that beasty...

Wooden shields are one of the first things I give my military, they offer protection even before I even have leather to make armor with and I'll never have to make new shields unless I want to conscript more soldiers...
