Elves accepting soap?
« on: November 20, 2014, 03:33:21 pm »

Just noticed this in my 40.16 world imported to 40.17.

The elves came to my fort this spring (and yet again didn't think to bring a grizzly to complete a mating pair), and once the main trading was done I thoughtlessly marked and offered the loose soap bars in my fort in order to clear room and hopefully entice them to bring more animals next year (and maybe wash out the pine resin smell they carry). They took it without any complaint or incident.

Upon further reflection, they should have gotten mad and left on account of the wood-derived lye. Anyone else noticing this, or is it just me? Not the most serious of bugs, but I couldn't help but notice how odd it was that elves would take soap as a gift.

At present they only object to being sold wood items directly.

Soap should be a declaration of war.  They are, after all, filthy hippies.

I knew that, because metal and green glass aren't strictly wood-derived. But according to the wiki, and all previous experience, elves don't (didn't) accept soap in trade or offering.

Is that so? Guess I'd may as well clear out my large clear glass gems next time they come around, then. It used to be (at least in the latter DF2010/2012 releases as far as I remember) that anything even decorated with clear glass was a no-no in trade.

Once they finally bring me a female grizzly, I might provoke them to just that. Maybe I'll set the caged prisoners up in the wood furnace rooms.

Soap currently only implies an animal kill, which Elves currently don't mind due to their ethic of KILL_ANIMAL:JUSTIFIED_IF_SELF_DEFENSE.
The bug here is that soap does not also imply a plant kill, since there's currently nothing in the raws to indicate it (aside from [WOOD], which would have other side effects).

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

"All this soap - you poor dwarves must have some nasty animals around here!"

Does killing kittens to prevent catsplosion qualify as self defense?

It doesn't matter, they don't count. Delicious things never count.
