Drag Them to Hell: The Journey of an Elven Lieutenant
« on: November 02, 2014, 03:39:38 pm »

Hello!  I was inspired and need something to focus my free time.  So I have [what I think is] an rather uninteresting world, save one thing.

Spoiler: Original Post (click to show/hide)

TO DO:
Account for the Demons who led the goblins, 5 of them.

-Kill the minotaur CankerItches the Entrails of Strife
in ScorchControled
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

-Kill Uthimi SnailBait the Nightmares of Sap,
in MenacedFists
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

-Find (and probably kill) Desmo ThiefSeduce,
in PlanterClasps
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

-Find and confirm the body of Xubkib HellCharmed the Tender Mucuses,
allegedly entombed in FindNightmares.  He is the reason the site was built.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

-Coluppem  TerrorEvils was fighting its civ's last stand when it died.  As it was fighting their last stand, I am unsure where its body would be.  The elves may have eaten it.  I may go and look for it, but that would involve some extra work.

I am picking an elf as my first character for this run-through, as much because I like the modifications I made for them, and also because their start location borders two of the sites of interest.

  -Summary of my mods-
-Elves received natural skills

-Elves received a few weapons.  Namely:

I shall update the OP and/or this one/the one below it as I see fit, and expect spell-checking to occur throughout the whole thread occasionally.

Sounds neat!  I'm really digging the spells you gave the elves, I might have to add them to my own special mod-blend.

Looking forward to seeing how this goes.

So, onto my objectives and any conduct I plan to stick to:

-Conduct will depend on the character, species, and entity membership-
-I will conduct myself in a manner I see fit for elves of my type.  He will default to wooden weapons and attempt to stay within the bounds of character evolution.
Spoiler: Elven Ethics (click to show/hide)
-Which means, in general, that I will not attack wild animals, nor tolerate the wanton slaughter of them unprovoked.  I will also stay away from non-animal man leather, and low-quality leather.  I will not pick fruit that bears no seeds, and I will protect trees.  I may graduate to metal weaponry, but we'll see.
-I will gen a new character if when this one dies, but will try to keep him alive.  Safety first :p
-Animal men are less natural than animals, and trolls and other 'slow' sentients are less natural than animal men.  Which means flexibility.  speaking of, all civ creatures have Slow_Learner
-Im open to suggestions, but will try to place in-game before abstract.
---

My objective is to find and/or kill the demons of the world, although a closer examination of their status makes this objective dubious.
There are 5 demons of note:

-*Xubkib HellCharmed the Tender Mucuses of Dance
-*Uthimi SnailBait the Nightmares of Sap
-*Desmo ThiefSeduce
-*Coluppem  TerrorEvils
-*Atac

The Basics:
-Kill the minotaur CankerItches the Entrails of Strife
in ScorchControled
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
-Kill Uthimi SnailBait the Nightmares of Sap,
in MenacedFists
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
-Find and confirm the body of Xubkib HellCharmed the Tender Mucuses,
allegedly entombed in FindNightmares.  He is the reason the site was built.

I keep a log of all my adventurers and forts, and I will occasionally use that.  Here is what I have listed:

Athe Zepavelapama 'TundraLyric' 001

A cold wind blew over the badlands, stinging Athe's numb skin through his ramie outfit.  He was deemed too weak to wear the warrior's armor, fine grown oak, but as an ambusher and blowgunner he was okay with that.  His job often required the guise of a civilian, or so they told him when he was recruited 30 years ago.  It was why he was told to carry what looked like a harmless stick with him all the time.
As Athe walked slowly towards the elf in the distance, he wondered what duty would oblige such a great spirit to waste her days away in this cold, desolate wasteland.  As if sensing this thought, the green-clad figure turned around and said:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

'This land wasn't always evil and dead, you know.  We have paid some dwarves to dig up some rock, and in it we found rotting skeletons.  They took on this sticky black coating, and you could smell their pain.  It was a little like the smell in the air now, faintly putrid, but more corrupted.  The smell in the air is more mixed with the goblins down south and the merlocks to the north.  We are in a land of dying, Athe, one upon which death would be a mercy.'

'Sir?', Athe flashed a quick and measured salute.
'No no, child.  I am not asking you to do anything so vile.  I have spent my days here, gathering the information required to finish our job.  Almost 80 years of research went into the information I am giving you.
'While we only finished scattering the goblins of The Spurting Wrath but 20 years ago we succeeding in debasing their power structure back in The Ferocious War.  I don't remember seeing you there, amoung my lines, so I will say that during the deciding battle of that war we came face against a terrible power we had never seen before.  A demon.  You are aware they exist, correct Lieutenant?'

'Only by the vaguest of rumors and wildest human tales.'
'They do.  That monster took 13 of our soldiers to the grave with it, and died in a burst of fire so spectacular the elephant squad that killed it was immolated and everything within 10 Urists was unrecognizable.  We have no proof we killed it, save our impeccable memories and the relief of the Earth itself. '
'We have evidence that it was not the only one upon this Earth.  Word has reached us that the humans of The Foggy Confederacies have been studying one they captured in their ''Roasted War''.  For 20 years they have been attempting to solicit from it a source of power.  Besides the obvious implications, we cannot allow them to gain such an edge over us in combat.'

'In addition, our brethren of The Orange Love report a similar embarrassment at the hands of an abomination down in the tundras.  They say this creature fought with the strength of 20 mer, and its death caused a violent eruption from a nearby volcano.'
'All said, there are a counted total of 5 of these beasts.  We have reports that 3 of them are dead, and two more still live.  I want you to account for the 4 we did not personally slay.'

'Atac of The Mean Wrath was slain by a dragon in 70.  By tracing its body, we have located a minotaur who acquired its body for unknown purposes.  You are to kill CankerItches the Entrails of Strife.'

'Xubkib HellCharmed the Tender Mucuses was Master of The Fetid Seductions.  Our brethren of The Orange of Love disposed of it.  Its body is allegedly entombed in FindNightmares, which was constructed directly after its death.'

'Uthimi SnailBait the Nightmares of Sap still reigns in its well-fortified fortress of MenacedFists.  Its goblins reign over a large part of the eastern world.  Dispose of it by either raiding the fortress or search its personal vault ThrownBlock for clues'
Spoiler: ThrownBlock (click to show/hide)

'Desmo ThiefSeduce saw its civilization in ruin when it was captured by human forces in 139.  We received word two years ago that dwarves assimilated the leftover goblins as servants.  Silence Desmo before the humans gain any profane knowledge.'

'We must have all of their bodies accounted for or destroyed.  We cannot trust the mortals or goblins to keep our Earth safe.  You are to go out in the name of Nefola and keep our world safe.  We give you our full trust and authority.  Look at our maps before you go.'
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

And with that, Yarare turned from Athe and back into the bitter winds of the badlands.

Athe Zepavelapama 'TundraLyric' 002

After a survey of the maps, Athe felt ready to begin his journey.  Heading north through the Shameful Deserts, he came to a merlock hillock.  The merlocks, in the best of times, held a tenuous peace with every other race.  This included their closest allies and occasional trading partners, goblins.  One could find the other backstabbing or planning to backstab at any given point.  I guess evil is an opportunist, because there were several documented wars between the two.

Spoiler: on merlocks (click to show/hide)

The central structure of the hillock was a drinking mound, a place where bets are taken according to mob rule and blood is as common as wine.  They dont serve water on account of the frozen conditions, and Athe had heard a few stories about a traveler who was dowsed in his own water before being thrown out of the tavern.  The stink of dried blood and unwashed grim assaulted Athe as he shut out the cold behind him.

As he gazed about, Athe felt grateful that their eyes didn't glow like those of the goblins.  With all the eyes on him, he felt naked, dissected even.  An elf in the corner stood up and waved him into the corner with a cheerful whistle; giving Athe a much needed break in the tension.  He did not know this fellow, but an elf was a fine sight to see in this dark place.

Sitting down across from her, Athe noticed his thick troll fur armor
'Who are you, brother?  I am Athe TundraLyric.'
'They call me Amala Quatharisinu, elven freesword for hire.'
'Oh?  So you are not from our great forest retreats?'
'I'm a freesword, nobody owns me and nobody tells me how to live.  Been free since I was 12.  Do you want an escort through the wilds?  I'll run for credit.'
'I would prefer an elf companion to that of any other.  Ill take you up on that offer.  Tell me, do you worship Nefola?  She is our moral compass in these dark times.'
'I worship my sword, and pray to my health.  I'll be on my best elvish behavior if you'll stop preaching to me, deal?'
'So long as you can conduct yourself in the proper manner I can accept.  Let us go.'

Grabbing a copper sword that was easily as tall as he, Amala directs Athe out of the tavern and back to the south and west, citing that the easiest way to get to The Foggy Confederacy was to head north after going around the mountains.  After sleeping in shifts, Athe in a tree and Amala in a foxhole, they gathered their things and continued around purple clouds of murk until they came upon a small river.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

At the river, Athe had to reaffirm his ability to swim.  Most elves can naturally swim, and neither Amala nor Athe proved to be an exception.  As Athe was drying off on the far side, he spotted Amala ahead, walking casually up to a pack of vultures.  He was talking to them about the poor weather the region had suffered through recently.  While a warming sight, the smile that had crept onto Athe's lips fell when he witnesses Amala beginning to slaughter the whole pack of passive creatures for no apparent reason than to sate his bloodlust.  Had he communed with the pack only to hear their screams of confusion and terror?

Loading his blowgun, Athe scrambles forward and demands that Amala stop.  Amala complies, letting the last two fly away over the river.  When questioned, Amala only looked irritated and gives out an answer about how the land and its spoils are for the civilized races of the world.  With every ounce of restraint Athe has he informs him that such wanton slaughter will not be tolerated from him a second time.  Being an elf does not grant immunity to nature's judgement.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Not a single word was uttered until dusk, when the pair decide to stop at a dwarven hillock for their second night . . .

Athe Zepavelapama 'TundraLyric' 003a

The hillock contained a mixture of goblins and dwarves.  While most goblins were toiling and clearly subservient, all were practically dressed and looked healthy enough.  Athe rented a stable on the edge of the town for the night, refusing to share an inn with those beastly goblins. Amala, however, refused to share the stable with any 'filthy tree-humping animals' and demanded Athe pay for his proper room at the inn.  Childish insults aside, Athe agreed it was only fair for services rendered.

The inn offered sunshine, so Athe stayed to converse with the barkeep, the only other relatively sober person in the place.  Conversation began about the alcohol.  Dwarves were relatively good with respecting their plant crops, taking the time to let the plant mature and then replanting the seed to complete the lifecycle.  The barkeep was not the brewmaster, nor interested in such talk, and conversation drifted towards the goblin workers.  They weren't properly refugees so much as paying off their debts.  They were given houses and livestock in return for work.  The dwarves insisted their stay was voluntary, payment taken from goblin clans rather than individuals so the social burden would keep them more compliant.  Interesting concepts, and the goblins did seem happy . . .

When the night grew coldest Athe bid farewell to his charismatic companion and slept uneasily in the stables.  Its much safer than the dwarves gave it credit for, since elves can talk to the animals.  The morning brought travelers, eagerly passing to and from places more habitable up north.  This was still the edge of civilization, if you could call it that.
Amala was predictably hung over, even his hallowed elven body incapable of processing all of the liquor it must have strained.  Athe gave him an hour after sunrise to be ready, a deadline which was only just met.

As food was running short, Athe reluctantly traded his copper dagger for a few chunks of 'gorlak' meat.  The dwarven merchant assured him that it was a talking nuisance found deep in the Earth.  He claimed that it was, in fact, nothing bit a mouth.  The dagger was surely worth more, but Athe could find no other credible vendor worth haggling with.  The food would satiate them until they reached the first of the forest retreats in the afternoon.  Travel was sure to be dull, but there was a human runner who was willing to provide the location of the hamlet of PlanterClasps . . .

Athe Zepavelapama 'TundraLyric' 003b

As the distant trees became closer, Athe could feel a calm settle over him.  The Hoary Jungles were ahead, one of the only real seats of power in the world.  Guided by the force of Nefola, elven-kind had managed to become a mighty force, crushing the monsters of the dark and vanquishing the representation of chaos itself.  It was in these trees, as well as those of The Orange Love, that the well-being of the western world was discussed.  Their retreats freely intermingled with The Skunks of Clobbering, separated only by which guiding hand divined their lives.  The Orange Love catered to the Imere Rockrose the Oceanic Crow, and hailed from The Misty Jungle.
To Athe the bliss of the forest is truly sublime.  To live as such graceful creatures, uphold such mirthful standards, to live as one with nature yet be assigned as an intermediate between the divine and mundane; such was what being an elf meant.  The dwarves had their rocks, the goblins their devils, the humans even had their culture, but elves; elves inherited the essence and responsibility of life itself.

Such thoughts eased Athe into the forest.  The retreat itself was only an outpost in comparison to the splendor of the capital, but it was good to stock grown peaches and handsomely extracted fiber clothing.  Athe had little luck finding an acceptable grown hammer for trade, and most elves were busy with hymns to soothe the daily yet grievous wounds that the more callous creatures of the Earth inflicted.  Every day other 'civilizations' flagrantly ignored the signs of the Earth's displeasure, even the dwarves; whose abuse of the Earth even spread under the skin of the planet itself; which the elves were less capable of healing.

On their way out of the retreat after the midday meals, the pair came across an elven hammerman who offered his services at the mention of Athe's duty to Yarare.  The chieftess had led many through their most trying times, providing the strength of will required to fight back the dark.  Lene Thiluminaro, equipped with his elven club and grown wooden armor, will surely show himself a glorious addition to the  cause.

The company left the forest retreat and traveled until the dark of the third night, making a minimal camp by a frozen river.  Athe and Lene slept peacefully in a nearby tree while Amala remained huddled in another foxhole . . . and in the pre-Sun dawn Athe awoke to the smell of blood and charring wood.

Athe Zepavelapama 'TundraLyric' 004

. . . Amala grinned as he wiped the spit from face onto the back of his hand, and then onto the bloodied body of the kea.  'Well, I was checking them for size, but none of them seem big enough to yield a proper meal.  I think I'll have to do with some elf instead!'

Amala charged at Athe with his sword, but was not quite agile enough to catch the nimble elf.  Without a proper weapon himself, Athe led Amala towards Lene, who startled awake and joined the skirmish.  Athe cursed at his opponent, and readied his wooden arrows in his offhand.

Aiming carefully, Athe landed a shot into the gut of Amala.  Amala looked physically fine, but was clearly suffering from internal damage.  Turning about and running, Amala is chased down by Lene, whose hammer is unable to pierce through the copper helm of Amala.  Athe Asks Lene to cease fighting, wraps his fingers around the disgraced elf's neck, and squeezes.

Athe could feel the pulse stop before he felt the life dim.  This elf, this monster had taken life, had forced a decision upon Athe that was foreign to his people.  Amidst his tears of frustration and anger, Athe took account for his moral actions.  Had he broken the laws of his people?  Surely not, he hadn't provoked Amala, only spat at him and asked him to leave.  It was only in self defense, and defense of the forest, that he had taken a life.  As the numbing effect of the tears spread, he couldn't feel much of anything, but the relief he felt suggested the fight was a good thing.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
With the exception of his worthless fur clothing, the traitor had some gold on him, a copper helmet, and his two-handed sword.  Handing the helmet to Lene, Athe took the copper sword, as well as Lene's old wooden helmet.  With their affairs settled, Athe butchered the body of Amala, taking the supple meat and handing it to Lene to hold.  On his way across the river he informed a skunk of the crime of Amala, and asked him to spread the word.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

At the nearest settlement, a dwarven fort on the edge of the mountains, Athe traded the sword to a travelling merlock for his quiver of 25 arrows.  The dwarves in the fortress were directing the goblins into a basic formation.  Apparently, they were the dwarves' newest fodder. Their service seemed pathetic; their discipline was clearly poor, and the hammerer had a special elven hammer for 'disciplinary' purposes.  The goblins would take turns standing in lines and dressing off and watching their companions get beaten.
Was it right to force them into military service?  Their nature was cruelty, and yet it was wrong to outright kill them.  Something was to be said for them, so long as nature was fulfilled.

Moving on from the fortress, the pair passed by the edge of the mountains and into a forest retreat large enough to have its own grown market tree.  They would be spending two days here, consulting the laws of their people and attempting to decompress.

Athe Zepavelapama 'TundraLyric' 005

The forest retreat, Alinoosefi, was a local hub, created as a temporary center of crafting for the war effort.  After elven victory, it fell into general disuse, remaining of local importance as part of the elven trade route.  Because of its proximity to the dwarves, all trade goods were brought through to check them for ethical integrity.  Those that passed were sent north towards the capital, while items lacking quality were stored in a segregated refuse query; a pit kept staffed by burrowers and routinely filtered out according to their orders.

Since it was spring, the caravan was out somewhere, braving the dangers of dwarven mis-communication.  For creatures that live without light, they couldn't hear very well.  They exhibit consistent paranoia and even seem to hear voices originating from various rocks.  It is said that you don't want to sneak up on a dwarf for fear of sending it into an emotionless shock, and relations are constantly strained by their inability to lay sensible traps and restrict their arborocide.  Peculiarly, they claim they need the wood for beds and heat, yet can always be found sleeping outside in the rain and bragging about their 'hot liquid rocks'.

Aside, the retreat was alive with animal activity and elven guidance.  With spring came maintenance, renewal designed to prevent any pain the Earth might feel from the Elven Burden.  This past year proved fruitful for the elven race, and many children were born.  As nature prospers, however, so do those who squander her riches.  The annual commune with Nefola told The Skunks of Clobbering that the merlocks outnumber them, far and away outstripping the torture the humans can cause with their ignorance.  Casual rumors amongst the elves predicted that after the goblin scourge was finally dealt with the merlocks were next.

While Athe and Lene took great pleasure in their surroundings and kith, they dedicated the remainder of the first day and whole of the second day to fasting and letting nature permeate them in ways that rendered day to day living impossible.  Without the nourishment of food, intense meditation would allow elves to enter a trance-like state in which the unreal became real and even basic tasks such as walking in a straight line were impossible.  After hours of debilitating headaches, elves would deepen their haze and commune directly with the lifeforce of the world.  Largely a mystery even to the elves, only the holy druid could approach something resembling a working knowledge of the relationship between Elves, Lifeforce and The Force.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Their rituals completed and the commune ended, Athe and Lene spent the night cleansing themselves and deciding on their future course.  Both felt that despite the dangers they faced they would continue together.  Athe had lost his sandals during his commune, and traded the rest of the gorlak meat for a pair from an elven extractor.

Though weakened from their ordeal, Athe and Lene made good time, opting to bypass the capital for expedience's sake.  By the end of the sixth day, the pair had reached the first of the human providences, taking the hospitality of the local count for the night . . .
