Ship as a decoration and artillery support
« on: November 15, 2014, 02:50:08 pm »

Hello guys!
I am playing Masterwork 6.1 - Human Fortress mode for few days and an idea filled my mind. Namely i want to embark on some shore and after successful settlement, start to build the ship. I thought about 3 deck ship with siege weapons on it. At early game i thought about putting there some catapults on top and in middle deck and lower deck some ballistas and later replace them with cannons. But i have read that siege weapons can only shoot 2 Z-level heights so i don't know how to build it to be a big, beautiful ship. I know this might sound useless but i like doing such projects. Have you guys tried something similar?

Cheers,
Maverik

It would be better to ask questions about masterwork in the subsection for it http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?board=24.0

Though if you want to talk about vanilla, sure.

Ahh, sorry then. I should ask for board moving, i thought modding board is only for announcing df mods.

I thought about building a Galleon but don't know how copy it's superstructure beacuse Z-lvl shooting restriction.

Masterwork board is generally the place to go to talk about anything that's different from the base game, like magic and alternative metals. Since you're just asking about how to go about setting up an above-ground fort that looks like a warship and defend it thematically, I don't think there's any real reason to bring up that you'll be using MW at all- this could be just as fun to do in vanilla. (Possibly more so, since invaders can't climb defenses in MW and the idea of defending a ship while the marauders just climb right up on deck is a entertaining one.)

As for actual suggestions, you could do weapons/defenses along the ground level and reserve the rest for living/storage/workshops. A good sized treasure galleon design could probably contain everything you needed for military/fishing. It'd be fairly realistic too, since the main cannon batteries were typically set up along the interior of the broadsides of a ship, since gunpowder was quite useless when wet and you'd generally want to keep anything using it away from the humid breeze.

oh wow, yea that would be a lot of fun. You might want to set a low pop cap though, since it's be hard to expand a ship... well I guess you could make more ships!
