But in what environment will you pit them against each other? Default?

My pool is now dominated by some highly energetic breast-stroke swimmers that have wiped out all competition.  Food is minimal, as soon as it spawns, these guys can turn on the spot and hunt it down, they don't live long though, they don't have a pause button.
Pity really 'cause I had some slow, highly efficient worms that cruised around the edge of the pool, could stop and go backwards when they needed to, but turning was only achieved when they lunged at food/mate.

My efficient and fast swimmers got replaced by these tiny useless shits who only survived by being covered in little cilia type things, causing them to become massively sexually attractive, so all the good swimmers would reproduce with them instead.

In a hole in the ground there lived a dwarf. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a dwarf fortress, and that means magma.

http://www.ventrella.com/darwin/darwin.html

Only read pages 1 and 4, but on the off chance that no-one mentioned DarwinPond, here's a link :) I prefer it over GenePool, overall..

EDIT: This doesn't look dead yet either: http://thrivegame.forum-free.ca/forum Thrive, another evolution based game.. They're looking for an active community and people to help with development.. Can't think of a nobler cause ;)

Downloaded this, screwed around and then watched a thing die. It was quite sad.
