I recall noticing this once before during my previous 34.11 fort years back, and remember being curious about it then, so I'll ask now.

Heading towards year 40 of my current fortress, I had the level one caverns accessible while I did some upgrades to the drawbridges down there,
when I noticed an elven trader departing through the caves rather than along the arguably (much) shorter path on the surface.

Is this typical, and I just haven't noticed it more often because I keep the caverns sealed?

I just picture this little elf and his yak are going on an adventure through the underverse and wish I could tag along to see what happens.

Visitors just pathfind to the nearest edge of the map. Usually the cavern thing will happen if your depot is deep inside the fortress. It's not uncommon, in any case.
