Dwarves not shearing
« on: November 06, 2014, 05:26:46 pm »

So, I have a strange mood dorf who claimed my clothier's and demanding yarn cloth. I have four dwarves with the shearing labor enabled, I see an owned ewe wandering around, and I select "shear animal on my farmer's workshop and... they cancel the shear creature: No creature. My dorfs aren't shearing the ewe and think it's not a shearable critter? How can I make them shear a critter?

Has it already been sheared recently?  Not sure exactly how often you can shear an animal, but I think it was either once a season or once a year.

Okay, if that's the case, why aren't my dwarves spinning thread?

Have you told them to spin thread? Do they have the spinning labour enabled?

If you have a refuse pile that allows wool/hair, then shearing will generate a job to haul the wool there, preventing a spinning job from tasking it.

I've noticed this in .40 as well.  Hair does not appear to be categorized correctly as Yarn.  When I "Spin Thread" at the farmer's workshop...all of those threads just stay in the workshop and never properly get stockpiled.

Can the spinning job not just take the wool/hair from the refuse stockpile?

It can, but there'll be a delay on when you can use it without the job cancelling as long as the refuse pile takes wool. It messes up any job that wasn't ordered by the manager if you don't take timing into account.

You can of course always configure your refuse stockpile(s) not to take wool/hair. It's only ever created in the butchery and farmer's workshop, and it's only ever used by the farmer's workshop, so dragging it to the refuse pile is normally just pointless busywork with no benefit whatsoever (hair's much too light to clutter a workshop).

I generally tend to go with as little hauling as possible. If the mason's shop gets too full of rock furniture, just build another one. A shop takes 3x3 tiles and can take dozens, often over a hundred furniture items before cluttering - QSP without wasting dwarfs' time with hauling jobs! Everybody wins!

I am not worried then.  I would never order someone to spin wool until I had yarn stockpiled.
