I miss the old versions that had trade guilds.  The guild leaders would meet with your manager and demand that jobs be created for their workers, and things like this.  There were not any punishments if job quotas were not met, but guild members would get unhappy thoughts if they did not have enough work.  It was possible to have tantrums.

Also, dwarfs could open up stores (you built them like a trade depot, but you could not control what kind of store it would be) and buy and sell things.

Unfortunately this had the effect of a lot of claimed/owned junk piling up in rooms and in corridors, but I thought it was still fun.

It didn't really interact with export restrictions, but it gave you a way to distribute the random things nobles would mandate.

I'm not sure if soldiers had to purchase their weapons and armor, I think you could still issue them what you pleased and they would wear it.  I know champions other and legendaries were immune to the economy system and could just take what they pleased, but regular soldiers might have had to pay for things.

Nobles always came back then, but you did have a choice of keeping things egalitarian for the working classes, or starting up the economy by minting coins.  This would then make the dwarfs get paid for their jobs, and charge them rent for their rooms based on quality and such.

I hope the economy comes back sometime soon, but it will probably be a year or two at a minimum.

Justice is broken insofar as its pointless (to most the players) and the fort is healthier without it.

But it works.

Justice is broken insofar as its pointless (to most the players) and the fort is healthier without it.

But it works.

It's useful for controlling tantruming dorfs. They do a lot less damage when tied up next to a well than if they're free to break stuff and punch people.

Less useful if you have mandating nobles.

Hey folks, do I need both a guard captain and a hammerer?
I have left the position of latter empty so far.

When my fort was a barony, the guard captain once punished those who violated an export restriction. But since I had a king, I haven't seen him do anything about crimes, despite there were dorfs who started fist fight that killed innocent victims. I saw dorfs running around reporting crimes (including my king and mayor), but nobody got punished.

Oh, never mind, I saw the justice menu...I have to convict the criminals manually.

No, you don't need, but it adds variety to gameplay.

I plan to carve a shallow cave in the sewer where the hammerer would sspend the rest of his life with a plot of plump helmet and monotonous sound of underground water flow.

I personally enjoy the justice system, as I've found that one of the most effective means of preventing tantrum spirals is to apprehend the dwarves causing the problem.  Doesn't work if the whole fortress is nuts, obviously.

I've looked a lot at the nobles screen to catch the queens production mandates and their fulfillment, and I haven't seen any failure. However, I've brought restricted stuff to the trade depot because I otherwise wouldn't get the OTHER stuff in those bins to the depot. In the first case, I didn't overrule any culling to do so, so I think the export ban was imposed AFTER the stuff was brought or at least ordered to be brought to the depot. Seems like I need to set up a quantum stockpile for amulets (hm, the royal quarters might be the spot for that). The queen also has a fetishism for hatch covers (and ballista parts), but I don't think using them for their intended purpose will unleash her unrighteous anger?

When it comes to the technical part of the justice system, I've appointed a hammerer, but no sheriff. I'm still waiting for the goblins to arrive to donate the metal I need for the chains for the jail (hm, I've forgotten to get the engraver to decorate the cells). It seems a hammerer alone does nothing unless I elect to convict someone, and silly royal tantrums do not have my sympathy. My fortress has otherwise seen no "real" crimes (on the other hand, they're rather incompetent in the reproduction department as well. A single couple [married on arrival] has produced the whole fort's child population of 4).

I would like to see dwarf crime during non-tantrum times, especially violent dwarves with grudges fighting if forced to live or work together. It would make justice more useful for most of the game.

you have to convict people on the justice screen. Nobles will order people beaten and such for production and export violations, but everything else is up to you.

The shift was made when vampires were introduced, so that you weren't immediately told who vampires were.  It's to set the groundwork for later things about dwarves lying (which does happen in the case of vampires, but not in any other case I've seen).

Why would you want that automated? What if you want to convict an annoying dwarf unrelated to the crime?

DF is all about micromanagement so it fits great.

DF is all about micromanagement so it fits great.
You can also convict that same dwarf for every crime that has ever been committed in the fortress, nothing says vengeance like a 500 year jail sentence
