Optimising military schedule and training for military
« on: November 04, 2014, 07:36:05 am »

Hello everyone!

I am interested in hearing about the best way to optimise scheduling and training in the new DF2014. For example, i have two squads of marksdwarves at the moment. One is set to train for 2 months (3 minimum out of 5 required to start training), and the other are manning a defensive tower out the front of the fortress (3 out of 5 minimum on a station order, tower has ammo and food in the lower levels) for the 2 months. They rotate after two months and the other group trains while the originally training group is now stationed.

Is this optimal? should training and stations be longer, or have a higher minimum (4 out of 5 in this case?). So far i only have marksdwarves since i have no good quality metal on my entire map, so far it looks like i have to put my military in copper armour.

Any advice on efficient ways to schedule, to get the most out of training and to typically build a strong military without danger rooms (i dont use danger rooms or traps typically). is very appreciated.

I usual have my dwarves train in groups of 2. This maximizes time spent training and sparring since they do not have to wait for other dwarves to show up for demonstrations. Plus I have my training area by the front gateso I do not have to split them off for guard duty.

For all military:
Stone detailing and pump operating turned on, they should train they strenght (pumps) and agility (stone detailing), when They are off duty.
Close combat soldiers have 2x 2 dorfs training in first days, after a year or two, They are leaders of two squads (2 teachers per 8 newbies). After a year these two squads are training in sessions 6 dorfs, other 4 are in civilian duty, where They are pumping or stone detailing.

Marksdwarfs have quite different training, they usualy have 6x 1dorf training (because i have 6 archery targets per squad, and there is turned on baracks for every target) in 2 months sessions - 2 months free time. They have access to Their own normal barrack too, to train dodging, discipline, fighting, etc

In my fortress dwarves are dying from old age.
Dwarven wine is a little bit like good chicken soup:  solid at room temperature.

I don't think it's really necessary anymore. Dwarves seem to train and spar fine in large groups. Marksdwarves will fully utilize archery ranges as long as they have a barracks assigned.
